Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati
One time, the-Blessed-One at-Varanasi he-stayed,
isipatane miga-dāye.
(in the) Isipatana Game-Refuge.
Tatra kho bhagavā
There *** the-Blessed-One,
pañca-vaggiye bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.
(to the) group-of-five monks, addressed (them): "Monks!"
“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ.
"Venerable one!" those monks, (to) the-Blessed-One, (they) responded.

not-self

1. Form

“Rūpaṃ, bhikkhave, an-attā.
"Form, monks, (is) not-self.
Rūpañca hidaṃ, bhikkhave, attā abhavissa,
If form, *********, were the-self,
nayidaṃ rūpaṃ ābādhāya saṃvatteyya,
this form {would not} {lead-to} affliction.
labbhetha ca rūpe:
(one could) obtain-their-wish ** (from) form,
‘evaṃ me rūpaṃ hotu,
‘Thus my form [shall] be [such a way],
evaṃ me rūpaṃ mā ahosī’ti.
thus my form [shall] not be [such a way].’
Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, rūpaṃ an-attā,
[But] since ** ***, *********, form (is) not-self,
tasmā rūpaṃ ābādhāya saṃvattati,
therefore form {leads-to} affliction,
na ca labbhati rūpe:
(and one can) not ** obtain-one’s-wish (from) form:
‘evaṃ me rūpaṃ hotu,
‘Thus my form [shall] be [such a way],
evaṃ me rūpaṃ mā ahosī’ti.
thus my form [shall] not be [such a way].’

2. Feeling

Vedanā an-attā.
"feeling (is) not-self.
Vedanā ca hidaṃ, bhikkhave, attā abhavissa,
If feeling, *********, were the-self,
nayidaṃ vedanā ābādhāya saṃvatteyya,
this feeling {would not} {lead-to} affliction.
labbhetha ca vedanāya:
(one could) obtain-their-wish ** (from) feeling,
'‘evaṃ me vedanā hotu,
‘Thus my feeling [shall] be [such a way],
evaṃ me vedanā mā ahosī’ti.
thus my feeling [shall] not be [such a way].’
Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, vedanā an-attā,

therefore feeling {leads-to} affliction,

3. Perception

Saññā an-attā.
"perception (is) not-self.
saññā ca hidaṃ, bhikkhave, attā abhavissa,
If perception, *********, were the-self,

this perception {would not} {lead-to} affliction.
labbhetha ca saññāya:
(one could) obtain-their-wish ** (from) perception,

4. Fabrications

saṅkhārā an-attā.
"[mental] fabrications (are) not-self.
Saṅkhārā ca hidaṃ, bhikkhave, attā abhavissaṃsu,
If fabrications, *********, were the-self,
nayidaṃ saṅkhārā ābādhāya saṃvatteyyuṃ,
these fabrications {would not} {lead-to} affliction.
labbhetha ca saṅkhāresu:
(one could) obtain-their-wish ** (from) fabrications,
‘evaṃ me saṅkhārā hontu,
‘Thus my fabrications [shall] be [such a way],
evaṃ me saṅkhārā mā ahesun’ti.
thus my fabrications [shall] not be [such a way].’
Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā an-attā,
[But] since ** ***, *********, fabrications (is) not-self,
tasmā saṅkhārā ābādhāya saṃvattanti,
therefore fabrications {leads-to} affliction,
na ca labbhati saṅkhāresu:
(and one can) not ** obtain-one’s-wish (from) fabrications:

5. Consciousness

Viññāṇaṃ an-attā.
"consciousness (is) not-self.
Viññāṇañca hidaṃ, bhikkhave, attā abhavissa,
If consciousness, *********, were the-self,
nayidaṃ viññāṇaṃ ābādhāya saṃvatteyya,
this consciousness {would not} {lead-to} affliction.
labbhetha ca viññāṇe:
(one could) obtain-their-wish ** (from) consciousness,
‘evaṃ me viññāṇaṃ hotu,
‘Thus my consciousness [shall] be [such a way],
evaṃ me viññāṇaṃ mā ahosī’ti.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, viññāṇaṃ an-attā,

1. Form

Taṃ kiṃ maññatha, bhikkhave,
What (do) you think, monks —
rūpaṃ niccaṃ vā a-niccaṃ vā”ti?
(Is) form permanent or im-permanent **?
“a-niccaṃ, bhante”.
im-permanent, lord.
“Yaṃ pan-ā-niccaṃ dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā”ti?
that (which is) ***-im-permanent: (is that) suffering or (is) that happiness **?
“Dukkhaṃ, bhante”.
Suffering, lord.
“Yaṃ pan-ā-niccaṃ dukkhaṃ vipariṇāma-dhammaṃ,

2. Feeling

“Vedanā niccā vā a-niccā vā?”ti
(Is) feeling permanent or im-permanent ?
“a-niccā, Bhante.”

“Yaṃ pan-ā-niccaṃ dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā”ti?
that (which is) ***-im-permanent: (is that) suffering or (is) that happiness **?

"Therefore, monks,

1. Form

yaṃ kiñci rūpaṃ
any such form,
atītā-(a)n-āgata-paccuppannaṃ
[whether] past, -not-arrived-yet, (or) -present;
ajjhattaṃ vā bahiddhā vā
internal or external **;
oḷārikaṃ vā sukhumaṃ vā
blatant or subtle **;
hīnaṃ vā paṇītaṃ vā
inferior or sublime;
yaṃ dūre santike vā,
whatever distant (or) near **:
sabbaṃ rūpaṃ:
every form [is to be realized as]:
‘n’etaṃ mama,
'this (is) {not} mine,
n'eso-'ham-asmi,
this I am {not},
na meso attā’ti
this (is) {not} {my} self.’
evametaṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ
Thus as-(it)-actually-is,
sammap-paññāya daṭṭhabbaṃ.
(with)-right-wisdom (one)-must-see-(it).

2. Feeling

conclusion

Evaṃ passaṃ, bhikkhave,
"Thus seeing, *********,
sutavā ariya-sāvako
(the) well-instructed noble-[one’s]-disciple:
Rūpasmim-pi nibbindati,
[regarding] form; (he) becomes-disenchanted (with that),
Vedanāya-pi nibbindati,
feelings; (he) becomes-disenchanted (with that),
Saññāya-pi nibbindati,
perceptions; (he) becomes-disenchanted (with that),
Saṅkhāresu-pi nibbindati,
fabrications; (he) becomes-disenchanted (with that),
Viññāṇasmim-pi nibbindati.
consciousness; (he) becomes-disenchanted (with that),
Nibbindaṃ virajjati;
Disenchanted, (he) becomes-dispassionate.
virāgā vimuccati.
(Through) dispassion, (he) is-[fully]-released.
Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṃ hoti.
(With) full release, 'Fully released.' knowledge occurs.
‘Khīṇā jāti,
[He discerns that] 'Destroyed Birth,
vusitaṃ brahma-cariyaṃ,
fulfilled (the) holy-life,
kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ,
did (what) needed-to-be-done,
nā-(a)paraṃ itthattāyā’ti
Nothing-further (for) this-state-of-being.'"
pajānātī”ti.

Idam-avoca bhagavā.
That-was-said (by) the-Blessed-One.
Attamanā pañca-vaggiyā bhikkhū
Gratified, (the) {group-of}-five monks,
bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhi-nanduṃ.
[reacted to] the-Blessed-One’s speech (by) re-joicing.
Imasmiñca pana veyyākaraṇasmiṃ bhaññamāne
And-while-this **** explanation was-being-given,
Pañca-vaggiyānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ
(the) {group of}-five monks,
An-upādāya
(through) not-clinging,
āsavehi cittāni vimucciṃsūti.
(their) hearts were-released {from the asinine-inclinations}.
