AN 5.144 Tikaṇḍakī (name of forest) (derived from b.bodhi trans.) |
♦ 144. ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sākete viharati tikaṇḍakīvane VAR. tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi — “bhikkhavo”ti. |
677On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāketa in the Tikaṇḍakī Grove. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus!” |
“bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. bhagavā etadavoca — |
678“Venerable sir,” those bhikkhus replied. The Blessed One said this: |
♦ “sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṃ appaṭikūle paṭikūlasaññī VAR vihareyya. |
“(1) Bhikkhus, it is good for a bhikkhu from time to time to dwell perceiving the repulsive in the unrepulsive. |
sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṃ paṭikūle appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
(2) It is good for a bhikkhu from time to time to dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in the repulsive. |
sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṃ appaṭikūle ca paṭikūle ca paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
(3) It is good for a bhikkhu from time to time to dwell perceiving the repulsive in both the unrepulsive and the repulsive. |
sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṃ paṭikūle ca appaṭikūle ca appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
(4) It is good for a bhikkhu from time to time to dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in both the repulsive and the unrepulsive. |
sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṃ paṭikūlañca appaṭikūlañca tadubhayaṃ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyya sato sampajāno. |
(5) It is good for a bhikkhu from time to time to dwell equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending, having turned away from both the repulsive and the unrepulsive. |
♦ “kiñca VAR, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca appaṭikūle paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya? |
680(1) “And for the sake of what benefit should a bhikkhu dwell perceiving the repulsive in the unrepulsive? |
‘mā me rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādī’ti — idaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca appaṭikūle paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
‘Let no lust arise in me toward things provocative of lust!’: for the sake of this benefit a bhikkhu should dwell perceiving the repulsive in the unrepulsive. |
♦ “kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca paṭikūle appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya? |
681(2) “And for the sake of what benefit should a bhikkhu dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in the repulsive? |
‘mā me dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādī’ti — idaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca paṭikūle appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
‘Let no hatred arise in me toward things provocative of hatred!’: for the sake of this benefit a bhikkhu should dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in the repulsive. |
♦ “kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca appaṭikūle ca paṭikūle ca paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya? |
682(3) “And for the sake of what [170] benefit should a bhikkhu dwell perceiving the repulsive in both the unrepulsive and the repulsive? |
‘mā me rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādi, mā me dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādī’ti — idaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca appaṭikūle ca paṭikūle ca paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
‘Let no lust arise in me toward things provocative of lust, and no hatred toward things provocative of hatred!’: for the sake of this benefit a bhikkhu should dwell perceiving the repulsive in both the unrepulsive and the repulsive. |
♦ “kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca paṭikūle ca appaṭikūle ca appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya? |
683(4) “And for the sake of what benefit should a bhikkhu dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in both the repulsive and the unrepulsive? |
‘mā me dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādi, mā me rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādī’ti — idaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca paṭikūle ca appaṭikūle ca appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya. |
‘Let no hatred arise in me toward things provocative of hatred, and no lust toward things provocative of lust!’: for the sake of this benefit a bhikkhu should dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in both the repulsive and the unrepulsive. |
♦ “kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca paṭikūlañca appaṭikūlañca tadubhayaṃ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyya? |
684(5) “And for the sake of what benefit should a bhikkhu dwell equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending, having turned away from both the repulsive and the unrepulsive? |
‘sato sampajāno mā me kvacani VAR katthaci kiñcanaṃ VAR rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādi, mā me kvacani katthaci kiñcanaṃ dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādi, mā me kvacani katthaci kiñcanaṃ mohanīyesu dhammesu moho udapādī’ti — |
‘Let no lust at all arise in me anywhere in any way regarding things provocative of lust! Let no hatred at all arise in me anywhere in any way regarding things provocative of hatred! May no delusion at all arise in me anywhere in any way regarding things that breed delusion!’:1145"" |
idaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṃ paṭicca paṭikūlañca appaṭikūlañca tadubhayaṃ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyya sato sampajāno”ti. catutthaṃ. |
for the sake of this benefit a bhikkhu should dwell equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending, having turned away from both the repulsive and the unrepulsive.” |
