♦ 38. “sattahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu |
“Mendicants, a mendicant with seven qualities |
nacirasseva catasso paṭisambhidā |
will soon realize the four kinds of textual analysis |
sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyya. |
and live having achieved them with their own insight. |
katamehi sattahi? |
What seven? |
idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu |

1. ‘idaṃ me cetaso līnattan’ti |
It’s when a mendicant truly understands: |
yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti; |
1. ‘This is mental sluggishness.’ |
2. ajjhattaṃ saṃkhittaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘ajjhattaṃ me saṃkhittaṃ cittan’ti |
2. They truly understand |
yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti; |
internally contracted mind as ‘internally contracted mind’. |
3. bahiddhā vikkhittaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘bahiddhā me vikkhittaṃ cittan’ti |
3. They truly understand |
yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti; |
externally scattered mind as ‘externally scattered mind’. |
4. tassa viditā vedanā uppajjanti, viditā upaṭṭhahanti, viditā abbhatthaṃ gacchanti; |
4. They know feelings as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. |
5. viditā saññā uppajjanti, viditā upaṭṭhahanti, viditā abbhatthaṃ gacchanti; |
5. They know perceptions as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. |
6. viditā vitakkā uppajjanti, viditā upaṭṭhahanti, viditā abbhatthaṃ gacchanti; |
6. They know thoughts as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. |
7. sappāyāsappāyesu kho panassa dhammesu hīnappaṇītesu kaṇhasukkasappatibhāgesu |
7. The characteristics of qualities—suitable or unsuitable, inferior or superior, or those on the side of dark or bright— |
nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ hoti sumanasikataṃ sūpadhāritaṃ suppaṭividdhaṃ paññāya. |
are properly grasped, attended, borne in mind, and comprehended with wisdom. |
imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu nacirasseva catasso paṭisambhidā sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyā”ti. |
A mendicant with these seven qualities will soon realize the four kinds of textual analysis and live having achieved them with their own insight.” |

♦ 172. tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi — “āvuso bhikkhave”ti. “āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṃ. āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca — |
There Sāriputta addressed the mendicants: “Reverends, mendicants!” “Reverend,” they replied. Sāriputta said this: |
♦ “addhamāsūpasampannena me, āvuso, atthapaṭisambhidā sacchikatā odhiso byañjanaso. tamahaṃ anekapariyāyena ācikkhāmi desemi paññāpemi paṭṭhapemi vivarāmi vibhajāmi uttānīkaromi. yassa kho panassa kaṅkhā vā vimati vā, so maṃ pañhena. ahaṃ veyyākaraṇena sammukhībhūto no satthā yo no dhammānaṃ sukusalo. |
“Reverends, I realized the textual analysis of the meaning—piece by piece and expression by expression—a fortnight after I ordained. In many ways I explain, teach, assert, establish, clarify, analyze, and reveal it. Whoever has any doubt or uncertainty, let them ask me, I will answer. Our teacher is present, he who is so very skilled in our teachings. |
♦ “addhamāsūpasampannena me, āvuso, dhammapaṭisambhidā sacchikatā odhiso byañjanaso. tamahaṃ anekapariyāyena ācikkhāmi desemi paññāpemi paṭṭhapemi vivarāmi vibhajāmi uttānīkaromi. yassa kho panassa kaṅkhā vā vimati vā, so maṃ pañhena. ahaṃ veyyākaraṇena sammukhībhūto no satthā yo no dhammānaṃ sukusalo. |

♦ “addhamāsūpasampannena me, āvuso, paṭibhānapaṭisambhidā sacchikatā odhiso byañjanaso. tamahaṃ anekapariyāyena ācikkhāmi desemi paññāpemi paṭṭhapemi vivarāmi vibhajāmi uttānīkaromi. yassa kho panassa kaṅkhā vā vimati vā, so maṃ pañhena. ahaṃ veyyākaraṇena sammukhībhūto no satthā yo no dhammānaṃ sukusalo”ti. dutiyaṃ. |
