AN 10.6 Concentration |
Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami … pe … ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: |
Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him: |
“siyā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhuno tathārūpo samādhipaṭilābho yathā |
“Bhante, could a bhikkhu obtain such a state of concentration that |
neva pathaviyaṃ pathavisaññī assa, |
(1) he would not be percipient of earth in relation to earth; |
na āpasmiṃ āposaññī assa, |
(2) of water in relation to water; |
na tejasmiṃ tejosaññī assa, |
(3) of fire in relation to fire; |
na vāyasmiṃ vāyosaññī assa, |
(4) of air in relation to air; |
na ākāsānañcāyatane ākāsānañcāyatanasaññī assa, |
(5) of the base of the infinity of space in relation to the base of the infinity of space; |
na viññāṇañcāyatane viññāṇañcāyatanasaññī assa, |
(6) of the base of the infinity of consciousness in relation to the base of the infinity of consciousness; |
na ākiñcaññāyatane ākiñcaññāyatanasaññī assa, |
(7) of the base of nothingness in relation to the base of nothingness; |
na nevasaññānāsaññāyatane nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasaññī assa, |
(8) of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception in relation to the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; |
na idhaloke idhalokasaññī assa, |
(9) of this world in relation to this world; |
na paraloke paralokasaññī assa; |
(10) of the other world in relation to the other world, |
saññī ca pana assā”ti? |
but he would still be percipient?” |

“But how, Bhante, could he obtain such a state of concentration?” |

“Idhānanda, bhikkhu evaṃsaññī hoti: |
“Here, Ānanda, a bhikkhu is percipient thus: |
‘etaṃ santaṃ etaṃ paṇītaṃ yadidaṃ sabbasaṅkhārasamatho sabbūpadhipaṭinissaggo taṇhākkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānan’ti. |
‘This is peaceful, this is sublime, that is, the stilling of all activities, the relinquishing of all acquisitions, the destruction of craving, dispassion, cessation, nibbāna.’ |
Evaṃ kho, ānanda, siyā bhikkhuno tathārūpo samādhipaṭilābho yathā |
It is in this way, Ānanda, that a bhikkhu could obtain such a state of concentration that he would |

na idhaloke idhalokasaññī assa, |
of this world in relation to this world; |
na paraloke paralokasaññī assa; |
of the other world in relation to the other world, but he would still be percipient.” |
