SN 47.1 [The Lady] ambapāli-discourse |
evaṃ me sutaṃ — |
Thus I heard - |
ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā vesāliyaṃ viharati |
one time The-Blessed-One, in-vesāli he-dwelled, |
ambapāli-vane. |
[at the Lady] ambapāli’s-forest. |
tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi — |
There *** The-Blessed-One, to-the-monks (he) addressed - |
“bhikkhavo”ti. |
“Monks!” |
“bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. |
“Yes Lord,” those monks to-The-Blessed-One they-responded. |
bhagavā etad-avoca — |
The-Blessed-One {said}-this: |
“ekāyano ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo |
[This is a] One-way ****, *********, path, |
sattānaṃ visuddhiyā |
(regarding) living-beings; (their) purification, |
Soka-paridevānaṃ sam-atikkamāya |
sorrow-(and)-lamentation; going-beyond-(that), |
Dukkha-domanassānaṃ atthaṅgamāya |
pain-(and)-distress; ending-(that), |
ñāyassa adhigamāya |
The-method; attaining-(that), |
nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, |
nibbāna; realizing-(that), |
yadidaṃ — cattāro sati-’paṭṭhānā. |
That-is – (the) four mindful-establishments. |
katame cattāro? |
which four? |
idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu |
Here, monks, a monk [does this]: |
kāye kāyā-(a)nupassī viharati |
body as body-contemplation he abides-in, |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā, |
(refrain:) ardent, aware, mindful, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ; |
Putting-away worldly greed-(and)-distress. |
vedanāsu vedanā-(a)nupassī viharati |
Feelings-as feelings-contemplation he abides-in |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā, |
(refrain:) ardent, aware, mindful, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ; |
Putting-away worldly greed-(and)-distress. |
citte cittā-(a)nupassī viharati |
Mind-as mind-contemplation he abides-in, |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā, |
(refrain:) ardent, aware, mindful, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ; |
Putting-away worldly greed-(and)-distress. |
dhammesu dhammā-(a)nupassī viharati |
Mental-qualities-as mental-qualities he abides-in, |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā, |
(refrain:) ardent, aware, mindful, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-domanassaṃ; |
Putting-away worldly greed-(and)-distress. |
