atha kho āyasmā ānando pubbaṇhasamayaṃ
Then *** Venerable Ānanda, in-the-morning,
nivāsetvā patta-cīvaram-ādāya
having-dressed, bowl-&-robe-taken,
yena aññataro bhikkhun-upassayo tenupasaṅkami;
then (a) certain nun's-quarter (he) approached.
upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
having-approached, (on a) prepared seat (he) sat.
atha kho sam-bahulā bhikkhuniyo
Then *** some-number (of) nuns
yen-āyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkamiṃsu;
toward-venerable Ananda (they) approached;
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ
having-approached Venerable Ananda
abhivādetvā ekam-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.
(and) paid-homage, (to) one-side (they) sat.
ekam-antaṃ nisinnā kho

Then the Venerable Ānanda,
sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā
in Sāvatthī, (for) alms (he) walked.
pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍapāta-paṭikkanto
after-(his)-meal (from) alms-round-return,
yena bhagavā ten-upasaṅkamiṃ;

upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ
Having approached the-blessed-one,
abhivādetvā ekam-antaṃ nisīdiṃ.

tassa kāye kāy-ānupassino viharato
while {dwelling in} body (as) body-contemplating, *******
kāy-ārammaṇo vā uppajjati kāyasmiṃ
(some) body-issues ** arise (from) the-body,
pariḷāho,
(such as) burning-fever,
cetaso vā līnattaṃ,
mental ** sluggishness,
bahiddhā vā cittaṃ vikkhipati.

Let me now withdraw it.’
so paṭisaṃharati ceva

na ca vitakketi na ca vicāreti.

‘a-vitakkomhi a-vicāro,
‘Without-thought (and) without-examination,

etāni, ānanda, rukkha-mūlāni,

etāni suññ-āgārāni!

Nimitta here does not mean Vism. Fixity, not samatha kung fu

You might think the inspiring sign (nimitta) referred by this sutta, which is used to follow the 7sb sequence to get into samadhi-sam-bojjhanga (four jhanas), is an earth kasina or a breath counterpart sign (visual white light similar to kasina style practice). That can work, but it’s not the primary nimitta referred to here.
As stated in MN 43, the 4sp are the “nimittas of samādhi”. 4Sp covers quite a broad range of meditation topics, so V&V (vitakka and vicara) takes on the “thinking and evaluation” type of activity, and not the mental fixity samatha kung fu of Vism.
See MN 20, where the 5 methods used to still the mind to get into 2nd jhāna, are called “nimittas”. Those are the type of nimittas referred to here by SN 47.10.
Also see SN 46.3, and compare the 7sb sequence. In this sutta, the first 2 links are not mentioned, what is mentioned is the “nimitta” inspiring sign. So if you now look in SN 46.3, the “nimitta” is cleary referring to sati-sam-bojjhanga (aka 4sp, nimittas of samadhi), and the 2nd is dhamma-vicaya-sambojjhanga, which clearly has discriminative and discerning capability not found in the earth kasina mental fixity vicara of Vism.
Last, let’s say “nimitta” is referring to earth kasina, and mental fixity as V&V is what’s used to get into jhāna. But then it says for directed samadhi, you need V&V, but once you know how to that, you can stop using V&V, the earth kasina. But this doesn’t work for vism. You sill need the earth kasina to get into 2nd jhana and higher. So every way you look at it, nimitta is referring to 4sp, vitakka and vicara (V&V) refers to directed thinking and evaluation, not mental fixity.

On the “undirected” development

Compare this sutta with SN 51.20 from iddhi pada samyutta, and you can see where jhana, 4sp, and 4ip intersect and overlap.

a-samkhittam

From SN 51.20 a-samkhittam is free of the hindrance of sloth and torpor.

vimuttam

vimuttam by deduction is in the relative sense, being free from hindrances, and not the liberation of nirvana yet.

paccha & pure

Paccha & pure, here translated as “afterwards and before”, means one’s mindfulness and comprehension is sharp, not sluggish or sleepy from hindrances, and not in a frozen state of samadhi from which one would have to emerge to regain the sharp S&S.
Also compare with AN 5.28, the 5th simile of the reviewing sign, confirms the “paccha pure”, using a simile, that the mind is lucid and aware, not in a frozen state.
