Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā
(at) one time, (the) Blessed-One
bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati
{was-staying at} Varanasi
isipatane miga-dāye.
(in the) Isipatana Game-refuge.
Tatra kho bhagavā
There *** (the) Blessed-One
pañca-vaggiye bhikkhū āmantesi:
(to the) {group-of}-five monks, addressed (them):
“Dve-'me, bhikkhave, antā
Two-of-these, ********, extremes,
pabbajitena na sevitabbā.
one-who-has-gone-forth {should} not indulge-in.
Katame dve?
Which two?
Yo cāyaṃ
That which is
kāmesu kāma-sukhallik-ānuyogo
regarding-sensual-objects (and) sensual-pleasure-devotion
hīno gammo pothujjaniko
base, vulgar, common,
an-ariyo an-attha-saṃhito.

upasamāya abhiñ-ñāya
{leads to} calm, to-direct-knowledge,
sam-bodhāya nibbānāya
to-self-awakening, to-Nirvana.

dukkhaṃ ariya-saccaṃ—
(is) suffering, (as a) noble-truth:
jāti-pi dukkhā,
Birth is suffering,
jarā-pi dukkhā,
aging is suffering,
byādhi-pi dukkho,
disease is suffering,
maraṇam-pi dukkhaṃ,
death is suffering.
ap-piyehi sam-pa-yogo dukkho,
(the) un-beloved; association-(with-them is) suffering.
piyehi vip-pa-yogo dukkho,
(the) beloved; dis-association-(with-them is) suffering.
yamp-icchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ—
that-(which is)-wished-(for); not getting (it) also (is) suffering.
saṃkhittena pañc-upādānak-khandhā dukkhā.
In-short, (the) five-clinging-aggregates (are) suffering.

2nd truth

Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave,
" this indeed, (and)-furthermore, monks,
dukkha-samudayaṃ ariya-saccaṃ—
(is) suffering's-origination (as a) noble truth-
yāyaṃ taṇhā ponob-bhavikā
the craving (that makes for) further-becoming —
Nandi-rāga-sahagatā
delight-(and)-passion -accompanies (it),
tatra-tatrā-(a)bhi-nandinī,
[now] here,-[now]-there-,highly-delighting (in it),
seyyathidaṃ—
that is,
kāma-taṇhā,
sensual-pleasure; craving-for (it).
bhava-taṇhā,
becoming; craving-for (it).
vi-bhava-taṇhā.
non-becoming; craving-for (it).

3rd truth

Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave,
" this indeed, (and)-furthermore, monks,
dukkha-nirodhaṃ ariya-saccaṃ—
is suffering's-cessation (as a) noble-truth:
yo tassā-yeva taṇhāya
that very craving;
A-sesa-virāga-nirodho
(its) non-remainder, fading, (and) cessation,
cāgo paṭi-nissaggo
renunciation, relinquishment,
mutti an-ālayo.

(as a) noble-truth:

Ñāṇañca pana me dassanaṃ udapādi:
Knowledge **** {**} (and) vision arose {in me}:
‘a-kuppā me vimutti,
'Un-provoked (is) my release.
ayam-antimā jāti,
This-(is the)-last birth.
n-atthi dāni punab-bhavo’”ti.
Non-existent now (is) further-becoming.
Idam-avoca bhagavā.
That-(was)-said (by) the-Blessed-one.
Attamanā pañca-vaggiyā bhikkhū
Gratified, {the group of}-five monks,
bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhi-nandunti.
[hearing] the-Blessed-one's words, re-joiced.
Imasmiñca pana veyyākaraṇasmiṃ bhaññamāne
And-while-this **** explanation was-being-given,
āyasmato koṇḍaññassa
in Venerable Koṇḍañña,
vi-rajaṃ vīta-malaṃ
(the) dust-less, stain-less,
dhamma-cakkhuṃ udapādi:
Dhamma-eye arose:
“yaṃ kiñci samudaya-dhammaṃ,
Whatever thing (has) origination-characteristic,
sabbaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhamman”ti.
all that (has) cessation-characteristic.

devas celebrate

Pavattite ca pana bhagavatā dhamma-cakke
{And so,} set-in-motion {** ****} the-Blessed-One (did to the) Dhamma-wheel.
bhummā devā sadda-manussāvesuṃ:
the-earth devas cried-out:
“etaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasiyaṃ isipatane miga-dāye
"the Blessed-One, at Varanasi in-Isipatana at-the-Game-Refuge,
an-uttaraṃ dhamma-cakkaṃ pavattitaṃ
(the) un-excelled Dhamma-wheel has-been-set-rolling.
ap-paṭivattiyaṃ
[No one can] stop-the-rolling:
samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā
(Any) contemplative or brahman,
devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā
or deva or mara or brahma,
kenaci vā lokasmin”ti.

4 great kings
Bhummānaṃ devānaṃ saddaṃ sutvā
(the) earth devas' cry was-heard-by
cātu-mahā-rājikā devā sadda-manussāvesuṃ:
four-great-kings'-[heaven] devas, (who) took-up-the-cry:
“etaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasiyaṃ isipatane miga-dāye
"the Blessed-One, at Varanasi in-Isipatana at-the-Game-Refuge,
an-uttaraṃ dhamma-cakkaṃ pavattitaṃ
(the) un-excelled Dhamma-wheel has-been-set-rolling.

[No one can] stop-the-rolling:

“etaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasiyaṃ isipatane miga-dāye

“etaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasiyaṃ isipatane miga-dāye

So in-that moment,

that brief-time,

Ayañ-ca dasa-sahassi-loka-dhātu
And-this ten-thousand-{fold}-cosmos-{*****}
saṅkampi sampakampi sampavedhi,
shivered & quivered & quaked,
ap-pamāṇo ca uḷāro obhāso loke pāturahosi
(while a) measure-less ** great radiance in-the-cosmos, appeared,
atikkamma devānaṃ devā-nubhāvanti.
surpassing the-devas divine-splendour.
Atha kho bhagavā imaṃ
Then *** the-Blessed-One {****}
udānaṃ udānesi:
{exclaimed} {this} exclamation:
“aññāsi vata bho, koṇḍañño,
{So you} really-know {**** ***}, Koṇḍañña?
aññāsi vata bho, koṇḍañño”ti.
{So you} really-know {**** ***}, Koṇḍañña?
Iti hidaṃ āyasmato koṇḍaññassa
Thus, this Venerable Koṇḍañña,
“aññāsikoṇḍañño” tveva nāmaṃ ahosīti.
"Kondañña who knows" {became his} name.
