AN 2.5 Known [Relentlessly] discourse |
“Dvinn-āhaṃ, bhikkhave, dhammānaṃ upaññāsiṃ— |
“Two-*****, *********, things (I have) known - |
yā ca a-santuṭṭhitā kusalesu dhammesu, |
** ** Dis-content (with regard to) skillful qualities [not yet developed], |
yā ca appaṭivānitā padhānasmiṃ. |
** and unrelenting exertion. |
Appaṭivānī sudāhaṃ, bhikkhave, padahāmi: |
Relentlessly I exerted myself, [thinking,] |
‘kāmaṃ taco ca nhāru ca aṭṭhi ca avasissatu, |
Gladly, [let only the] skin and tendons and bones remain, |
sarīre upa-s-sussatu maṃsa-lohitaṃ, |
(the) body (having) dried-up (the) flesh-&-blood, |
yaṃ taṃ purisa-thāmena purisa-vīriyena |
what ever manly-strength, manly-virility, |
purisa-parakkamena pattabbaṃ |
manly-courage can-attain, |
na taṃ a-pāpuṇitvā |
** (with) that not-(yet)-attained, |
vīriyassa saṇṭhānaṃ bhavissatī’ti. |
(my) vigor relaxing {won’t}-happen. |
Tassa mayhaṃ, bhikkhave, appamād-ādhigatā sambodhi, |
******my, *********, assiduity-[led to]-attainment (of) awakening. |
Appamād-ādhigato an-uttaro yogak-khemo. |
assiduity-[led to]-attainment (of) un-excelled {freedom from the}-yoke. |
Tumhe cepi, bhikkhave, appaṭivānaṃ padaheyyātha: |
“You too, monks, relentlessly (you) should-exert (yourselves), [thinking]: |
‘kāmaṃ taco ca nhāru ca aṭṭhi ca avasissatu, |
Gladly, [let only the] skin and tendons and bones remain, |
sarīre upa-s-sussatu maṃsa-lohitaṃ, |
(the) body (having) dried-up (the) flesh-&-blood, |
yaṃ taṃ purisa-thāmena purisa-vīriyena |
what ever manly-strength, manly-virility, |
purisa-parakkamena pattabbaṃ |

na taṃ a-pāpuṇitvā |

Tumhe-pi, bhikkhave, na-cirass-eva— |
You-too, monks, (in) no-long (time)-***-- |
Yass-atthāya kula-puttā sammadeva |
(For) the-reason good-sons rightly |
agārasmā an-agāriyaṃ pabbajanti, |
{go-forth} from-home (to) home-lessness *********, |
Tad-an-uttaraṃ— brahma-cariya-pariyosānaṃ |
(for) The-un-excelled-- holy-life’s-supreme-goal, |
diṭṭheva dhamme |
Here and now |
sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissatha. |
that special-knowing & realizing (he) enters (and) abides. |
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ: |
"Therefore, monks, Thus (you) should-train (yourselves): |
‘appaṭivānaṃ padahissāma. |
'relentlessly (we) will-exert (ourselves), [thinking,] |
‘kāmaṃ taco ca nhāru ca aṭṭhi ca avasissatu, |
Gladly, [let only the] skin and tendons and bones remain, |
sarīre upa-s-sussatu maṃsa-lohitaṃ, |
(the) body (having) dried-up (the) flesh-&-blood, |
yaṃ taṃ purisa-thāmena purisa-vīriyena |
what ever manly-strength, manly-virility, |

Thus-indeed, monks, (is how you) should-train (yourselves). |
