“Tī-’hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi |
“Three-(of)-these, *********, qualities |
samannāgato bhikkhu |
possessed by a monk, |
Apaṇṇaka-paṭipadaṃ paṭipanno hoti |
(the) faultless-path practiced ****, |
yoni cassa āraddhā hoti |
{and} the basis aroused for |
āsavānaṃ khayāya. |
Asinine-inclinations’ destruction. |
Katamehi tīhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu |
What three? Here, *********, a monk |
indriyesu gutta-dvāro hoti, |
{has} sense-faculty guarded-doors ****? |
bhojane mattaññū hoti, |
eating (in) moderation (he) has, |
jāgariyaṃ anu-yutto hoti. |
wakefulness, dedication-to-it (he) has. |
Kathañ-ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu |
"{And}-how, *********, {are a} monk['s] |
indriyesu gutta-dvāro hoti? |
sense-faculty guarded-doors ****? |
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu |

cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā |
With-the-eye, [visible]-form (he) sees. |
na nimittag-gāhī hoti |
(he) Does-not {grab}-signs ****. |
Nā-nubyañjanag-gāhī. |
Does-not {grab}-features. |
yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ cakkhu’ndriyaṃ a-saṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ |
Since-if-he-were-to {dwell with the} eye-faculty un-restrained ***********, |
Abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā a-kusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, |
greed-(and)-distress (and) evil un-skillful states would-invade [his mind]. |
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, |
His restraint (is put into) practice. |
rakkhati cakkhu-’ndriyaṃ, |
(he) protects (the) eye-faculty. |
Cakkhu-’ndriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. |
The eye-faculty restraint (he) undertakes. |
sotena saddaṃ sutvā |
With-the-ear, sounds (he) hears. |
na nimittag-gāhī hoti |
(he) Does-not {grab}-signs ****. |
Nā-nubyañjanag-gāhī. |
Does-not {grab}-features. |
yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ sot-indriyaṃ a-saṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ |

yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ jivh-indriyaṃ a-saṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ |
Since-if-he-were-to {dwell with the} tongue-faculty un-restrained ***********, |
Abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā a-kusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, |
greed-(and)-distress (and) evil un-skillful states would-invade [his mind]. |
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, |

rakkhati jivh-indriyaṃ, |
(he) protects (the) tongue-faculty. |
jivh-indriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. |
The tongue-faculty restraint (he) undertakes. |
kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phusitvā |
With-the-body, tactile-sensations (he) senses. |
na nimittag-gāhī hoti |
(he) Does-not {grab}-signs ****. |
Nā-nubyañjanag-gāhī. |
Does-not {grab}-features. |
yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ kāy-indriyaṃ a-saṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ |

manasā dhammaṃ viññāya |
With-the-mind, ideas (he) cognizes. |

reflecting carefully (on) food (he) consumes: |
‘neva davāya |
'not (for) amusement, |
na madāya |
not (for) intoxication, |
na maṇḍanāya |
not (for) beautification, |
na vibhūsanāya, |
not (for) attractiveness, |
yāva-deva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiyā yāpanāya |
only-for this body's maintenance (and) nourishment, |
vihiṃs-ūparatiyā |
injury-avoidance [from under eating], |
brahmacariy-ānuggahāya, |
[for] assisting (the) holy-life, |
iti purāṇañca vedanaṃ paṭihaṅkhāmi, |
[thinking:] thus old feelings [of hunger] I-will-terminate, |
navañca vedanaṃ na uppādessāmi, |
new feelings [of overeating] I-will-not-arouse, |
yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca |
{and} healthy I will-become, blamless and |
Phāsu-vihāro cā’ti. |
(in) comfort (I) dwell ****. |

Thus indeed, monks, a-monk |
bhojane mattaññū hoti. |

āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṃ parisodheti, |
obstructive qualities (of) mind (he) purifies, |
rattiyā paṭhamaṃ yāmaṃ |
At-night-time, first watch-of-the-night, |
caṅkamena nisajjāya |
walking-[meditation]-forward-and-backward (and) sitting [meditation], |
āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṃ parisodheti, |
obstructive qualities (of) mind (he) purifies, |
rattiyā majjhimaṃ yāmaṃ |
At-night-time, middle watch-of-the-night, |
dakkhiṇena passena sīhaseyyaṃ kappeti |
(on his) right side, (the) lion-lying-down [posture] *******, |
pāde pādaṃ accādhāya |
(one) foot (on the other) foot overlapping, |
sato sampajāno |
mindful (and) clearly-comprehending, |
uṭṭhāna-saññaṃ manasi karitvā, |
rising-[from sleep]-perception (his) mind sets, |
rattiyā pacchimaṃ yāmaṃ |
At-night-time, last watch-of-the-night, |
Pacc-uṭṭhāya |
After-rising [from lying down], |
caṅkamena nisajjāya |
walking-[meditation]-forward-and-backward (and) sitting [meditation], |
āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṃ parisodheti, |
obstructive qualities (of) mind (he) purifies, |
Evaṃ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu |
thus indeed, monks, a-monk |
jāgariyaṃ anuyutto hoti. |
{is} {devoted to} wakefulness. |

These indeed, monks, |
