AN 3.101 The Dirt-washer Paṁsudhovaka Sutta (AN 3:102) (eng-than) |
“Santi, bhikkhave, jātarūpassa oḷārikā upakkilesā paṃsuvālukā sakkharakaṭhalā. |
“There are these gross impurities in gold: dirty sand, gravel, & grit. |
Tamenaṃ paṃsudhovako vā paṃsudhovakantevāsī vā doṇiyaṃ ākiritvā dhovati sandhovati niddhovati. |
The dirt-washer or his apprentice, having placed (the gold) in a vat, washes it again & again until he has washed them away. |
Tasmiṃ pahīne tasmiṃ byantīkate santi jātarūpassa majjhimasahagatā upakkilesā sukhumasakkharā thūlavālukā. |
“When he is rid of them, there remain the moderate impurities in the gold: coarse sand & fine grit. |
Tamenaṃ paṃsudhovako vā paṃsudhovakantevāsī vā dhovati sandhovati niddhovati. |
He washes the gold again & again until he has washed them away. |
Tasmiṃ pahīne tasmiṃ byantīkate santi jātarūpassa sukhumasahagatā upakkilesā sukhumavālukā kāḷajallikā. |
“When he is rid of them, there remain the fine impurities in the gold: fine sand & black dust. |
Tamenaṃ paṃsudhovako vā paṃsudhovakantevāsī vā dhovati sandhovati niddhovati. |
The dirt-washer or his apprentice washes the gold again & again until he has washed them away. |
Tasmiṃ pahīne tasmiṃ byantīkate athāparaṃ suvaṇṇasikatāvasissanti. |
“When he is rid of them, there remains just the gold dust. |
Tamenaṃ suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā jātarūpaṃ mūsāyaṃ pakkhipitvā dhamati sandhamati niddhamati. |
The goldsmith or his apprentice, having placed it in a crucible, blows on it again & again to blow away the dross. |
Taṃ hoti jātarūpaṃ dhantaṃ sandhantaṃ niddhantaṃ aniddhantakasāvaṃ, |
The gold, as long as it has not been blown on again & again to the point where the impurities are blown away, |
na ceva mudu hoti na ca kammaniyaṃ, |
as long as it is not refined & free from dross, is not pliant, malleable, |
na ca pabhassaraṃ pabhaṅgu ca, |
or luminous. It is brittle |
na ca sammā upeti kammāya. |
and not ready to be worked. |
Hoti so, bhikkhave, samayo yaṃ suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā taṃ jātarūpaṃ dhamati sandhamati niddhamati. |
But there comes a time when the goldsmith or his apprentice has blown on the gold again & again until the dross is blown away. |
Taṃ hoti jātarūpaṃ dhantaṃ sandhantaṃ niddhantaṃ niddhantakasāvaṃ, |
The gold, having been blown on again & again to the point where the impurities are blown away, |
mudu ca hoti kammaniyañca pabhassarañca, |
is then refined, free from dross, pliant, malleable, & luminous. |
na ca pabhaṅgu, |
It is not brittle, |
sammā upeti kammāya. |
and is ready to be worked. |
Yassā yassā ca pilandhanavikatiyā ākaṅkhati—yadi paṭṭikāya, yadi kuṇḍalāya, yadi gīveyyake, yadi suvaṇṇamālāya—tañcassa atthaṃ anubhoti. |
Then whatever sort of ornament he has in mind—whether a belt, an earring, a necklace, or a gold chain—the gold would serve his purpose. |
Evamevaṃ kho, bhikkhave, santi adhicittamanuyuttassa bhikkhuno oḷārikā upakkilesā |
“In the same way, there are these gross impurities in a monk intent on heightened mind: |
kāyaduccaritaṃ vacīduccaritaṃ manoduccaritaṃ, |
misconduct in body, speech, & mind. |
tamenaṃ sacetaso bhikkhu dabbajātiko pajahati vinodeti byantīkaroti anabhāvaṃ gameti. |
These the monk—aware & able by nature—abandons, destroys, dispels, wipes out of existence. |
Tasmiṃ pahīne tasmiṃ byantīkate santi adhicittamanuyuttassa bhikkhuno majjhimasahagatā upakkilesā |
When he is rid of them, there remain in him the moderate impurities: |
kāmavitakko byāpādavitakko vihiṃsāvitakko, |
thoughts of sensuality, ill will, & harmfulness. |
tamenaṃ sacetaso bhikkhu dabbajātiko pajahati vinodeti byantīkaroti anabhāvaṃ gameti. |
These he abandons, destroys, dispels, wipes out of existence. |
Tasmiṃ pahīne tasmiṃ byantīkate santi adhicittamanuyuttassa bhikkhuno sukhumasahagatā upakkilesā |
When he is rid of them there remain in him the fine impurities: |
ñātivitakko janapadavitakko anavaññattipaṭisaṃyutto vitakko, |
thoughts of his caste, thoughts of his home district, thoughts related to not wanting to be despised. |
tamenaṃ sacetaso bhikkhu dabbajātiko pajahati vinodeti byantīkaroti anabhāvaṃ gameti. |
These he abandons, destroys, dispels, wipes out of existence. |
Tasmiṃ pahīne tasmiṃ byantīkate athāparaṃ dhammavitakkāvasissanti. |
“When he is rid of them, there remain only thoughts of the Dhamma. |
So hoti samādhi na ceva santo na ca paṇīto nappaṭippassaddhaladdho na ekodibhāvādhigato sasaṅkhāraniggayhavāritagato. |
His concentration is neither peaceful nor refined, has not yet attained calm or unification, and is kept in place by the fabrication of forceful restraint. |
Hoti so, bhikkhave, samayo yaṃ |
But there comes a time when |
taṃ cittaṃ ajjhattaṃ-yeva |
his mind inwardly |
San-tiṭṭhati san-nisīdati |
grows-steady, settles-down, |
ekodi hoti samādhiyati. |
Unified & concentrated. |
So hoti samādhi santo paṇīto |
His *** concentration (is) peaceful & refined, |
Paṭip-passaddhi-laddho ekodi-bhāv-ādhigato |
has attained calm & unification, |
na sa-saṅkhāra-niggayhavāritagato. |
and is no longer kept in place by the fabrication of forceful restraint. |
Yassa yassa ca abhiññā |
“And then whichever of |
sacchi-karaṇī-yassa dhammassa cittaṃ abhi-ninnāmeti |
the higher knowledges he turns his mind to know & realize, |
abhiññā sacchi-kiriyāya |
he can witness them for himself |
tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇāti sati satiāyatane. |
whenever there is an opening. |
1. So sace ākaṅkhati: ‘anekavihitaṃ iddhividhaṃ paccanubhaveyyaṃ—ekopi hutvā bahudhā assaṃ, |
1. “If he wants, he wields manifold supranormal powers. |
bahudhāpi hutvā eko assaṃ; āvibhāvaṃ, … |
Having been one he becomes many; having been many he becomes one. |
(2. divine ear.., 3. reading minds of others..., 4. recalling previous lives..., 5. divine eye..., 6...) |

So sace ākaṅkhati: ‘āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyan’ti, |
“If he wants, then through the ending of the effluents, he enters & remains in the effluent-free awareness-release & discernment-release, having directly known and realized them for himself right in the here & now. |
tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇāti sati satiāyatane”ti. |
He can witness this for himself whenever there is an opening. |
