ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā |
One time the-blessed-one, |
nātike viharati giñjak-āvasathe. |
(at) nātike (he) dwelled, (in the) brick-house. |
tatra kho bhagavā |
There indeed, the-blessed-one, |
bhikkhū āmantesi — |
(to the) monks (he) addressed - |
“maraṇas-sati, bhikkhave, |
"Death-remembering, monks, |
bhāvitā bahulī-katā |
developed (and) **** abundantly-practiced, |
mahap-phalā hoti mahā-nisaṃsā |
{is of} great-fruit *** (and) great-benefit, |
amat-ogadhā |
(the) deathless-(it)-plunges-into, |
amata-pariyosānā. |
(the) deathless-(it)-culminates. |
kathaṃ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, |
{And} how (is it) developed **, monks, |
maraṇas-sati kathaṃ bahulī-katā |
{how is} death-remembering ****** abundantly-practiced, |
mahap-phalā hoti mahā-nisaṃsā |
{to be of} great-fruit **** (and) great-benefit, |
amat'-ogadhā |
(the) deathless-(it)-plunges-into, |
amata-pariyosānā? |
(the) deathless-(it)-culminates? |

"here, monks, (a) monk: |
divase nikkhante |
(as) day departs |
rattiyā patihitāya |
(and) night returns, |
iti paṭisañcikkhati — |
thus (he) reflects - |
‘bahukā kho me |
"many indeed (for) me, |
paccayā maraṇassa — |
(are) [potential] causes (of my) death - |
ahi vā maṃ ḍaṃseyya, |
(a) snake ** I might-be-bitten (by), |
vicchiko vā maṃ ḍaṃseyya, |
{or a} scorpion ** I might-be-stung (by), |
sata-padī vā maṃ ḍaṃseyya; |
{or a} hundred-footed [centipede] ** I might-be-bitten (by), |
tena me assa kāla-kiriyā, |
because-of-that my **** time-of-death [would arrive], |
so mamassa antarāyo. |
that (for) me, (would be an) obstacle. |
upakkhalitvā vā papateyyaṃ, |
{or} stumbling ** (I) might-fall, |
bhattaṃ vā me bhuttaṃ byāpajjeyya, |
{or} food ** ** eaten might-trouble {me}, |
pittaṃ vā me kuppeyya, |
{or} bile ** ** might-provoke {me}, |
semhaṃ vā me kuppeyya, |
{or} phlegm ** ** might-provoke {me}, |
satthakā vā me vātā kuppeyyuṃ; |
{or} stabbing ** ** [bodily] winds might-provoke {me}, |
tena me assa kāla-kiriyā, |
because-of-that my **** time-of-death [would arrive], |
so mamassa antarāyo’ti. |
that (for) me, (would be an) obstacle. |

because-of-that, monks, (a) monk |
iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṃ — |
(in) such (a way he) should-investigate -- |
‘atthi nu kho me |
'is-there not indeed (in) me (any) |
pāpakā a-kusalā dhammā ap-pahīnā, |
evil un-skillful Dharmas un-abandoned, |
ye me assu rattiṃ kālaṃ |
that I might, (by) night time's [death] |
karontassa antarāyāyā’”ti. |
(still have) active (as an) obstacle? |

"If, monks, (a) monk |
paccavekkhamāno evaṃ jānāti — |
reflecting, thus realizes - |
‘atthi me |
'(there) exists (in) me |
pāpakā akusalā dhammā appahīnā, |
evil un-skillful Dharmas un-abandoned, |
ye me assu rattiṃ kālaṃ |
that I might, (by) night time's [death] |
karontassa antarāyāyā’ti, |
(still have) active (as an) obstacle? |
tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā |
because-of-that, monks, (a) monk, |
tesaṃy-eva |
(regarding) those-very |
pāpakānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ pahānāya |
evil un-skillful Dharmas' removal, |
adhimatto chando ca vāyāmo ca |
extraordinary desire and effort and |
ussāho ca ussoḷhī ca appaṭivānī ca |
diligence and endeavor and unrelenting ** |
sati ca sampajaññañca karaṇīyaṃ. |
remembering and lucid-discerning (he) should-do. |
seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, |
Just-as, monks, [if one had] |
āditta-celo vā āditta-sīso vā |
clothes-on-fire or head-on-fire **, |
tasseva celassa vā sīsassa vā |
(in regard to) those-very clothes or head **, |
nibbāpanāya |
(for its) Nirvana-fication [extinguishing], |
adhimattaṃ chandañca vāyāmañca |
extraordinary desire and effort and |
ussāhañca ussoḷhiñca appaṭivāniñca |
diligence and endeavor and unrelenting ** |
satiñca sampajaññañca kareyya; |
remembering and lucid-discerning (he) would-do. |
evamevaṃ kho, bhikkhave, tena bhikkhunā |
just like that, monks, (a) monk, |
tesaṃyeva |
(regarding) those-very |
pāpakānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ pahānāya |
evil un-skillful Dharmas' removal, |

extraordinary desire and effort and |
ussāho ca ussoḷhī ca appaṭivānī ca |

(still have) active (as an) obstacle, |
tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā |
then monks, (a) monk |
teneva |
for that very [reason], |
pīti-pāmojjena vihātabbaṃ |
enraptured-(with)-virtuous-mirth (he) should-dwell, |
aho-ratt-ānu-sikkhinā |
day-(and)-night-(he)-trains |
kusalesu dhammesu. |
(in) skillful ☸Dharmas. |
