Atha kho bhagavā	Then *** the-Blessed-One
āyasmantaṃ udāyiṃ āmantesi:	{addressed} venerable Udayi {*******}:
“kati nu kho, udāyi,	{Udayi}, how-many , {***},
Anus-satiṭ-ṭhānānī”ti?	{practices}-(should be)-recollected?
Evaṃ vutte,	When asked,
āyasmā udāyī tuṇhī ahosi.	venerable Udayi {was} silent {*****}.
Dutiyam-pi kho bhagavā	(for the) second-time, *** the-Blessed-One
āyasmantaṃ udāyiṃ āmantesi:	{addressed} venerable Udayi {*******}:

aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ	many-instances (of) previous-abodes-[lives]
anus-sarati,	(he) recollects,
seyyathidaṃ –	like-this -
ekampi jātiṃ dvepi jātiyo tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo pañcapi jātiyo	one birth, two births, three births, four births, five births,
dasapi jātiyo vīsampi jātiyo tiṃsampi jātiyo cattālīsampi jātiyo paññāsampi jātiyo	ten births, twenty births, thirty births, forty births, fifty births,
jāti-satampi jāti-sahassampi jāti-sata-sahassampi	one hundred births, one thousand births, one hundred thousand births,
anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe	many contractions-(of cosmic)-aeons,
anekepi vivaṭṭa-kappe	many expansions-(of cosmic)-aeons,
anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe –	many contractions-&-expansions-(of cosmic)-aeons, [recollecting],

‘amutrāsiṃ	There
evaṃ-nāmo evaṃ-gotto	(I had) such-(a)-name, such-(a)-clan,
evaṃ-vaṇṇo evam-āhāro	such-(an)-appearance, such-(was my)-food,
evaṃ-sukha-dukkhap-paṭisaṃvedī	such-pleasure-(and)-pain-(I)-experienced,
evam-āyu-pariyanto,	such-(my)-age-limit [expired].
so tato cuto	he, (from) that-state, passed-away,
amutra udapādiṃ [uppādiṃ (sī.)];	there, (re)-arose.

tatrāpāsiṃ	There too
evaṃ-nāmo evaṃ-gotto	(I had) such-(a)-name, such-(a)-clan,
evaṃ-vaṇṇo evam-āhāro	such-(an)-appearance, such-(was my)-food,
evaṃ-sukha-dukkhap-paṭisaṃvedī	such-pleasure-(and)-pain-(I)-experienced,
evam-āyu-pariyanto,	such-(my)-age-limit [expired].
so tato cuto	he, (from) that-state, passed-away,

Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ	thus (with its) characteristics (and) details
aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ	many-instances (of) previous-abodes-[lives]

Idaṃ, bhante, anussatiṭṭhānan”ti.	These, Lord, (are the) {practices to be}-recollected.”
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi:	Then *** the-Blessed-One {addressed} Venerable Ananda:
“aññāsiṃ kho ahaṃ, ānanda:	{I} *** knew, Ananda:
‘nevāyaṃ udāyī mogha-puriso	'this udāyi (is a) foolish-man!
Adhi-cittaṃ anuyutto viharatī’ti.	[he does not] {dwell} devoted (to the) higher-mind.

Kati nu kho, ānanda, anussatiṭṭhānānī”ti?	Ānanda, how many practices should be recollected?
“Pañca, bhante, anussatiṭṭhānāni.	“Five (of these), ******, practices-should-be-recollected.
Katamāni pañca?	which five?

Idha, bhante, bhikkhu	Here, Lord, (a) monk -

(V&V💭) sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ	(V&V💭) With-directed-thought, with-evaluation,
😁🙂 viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ	😁🙂 withdrawal-born rapture-&-pleasure,
🌘 paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.	🌘 first Jhāna (he) enters, dwells.

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā	(with) directed-thoughts-(and)-evaluation subsiding,
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ	internal assurance,
🌄 cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ	🌄 mind transcended-into-singularity,
🚫(V&V💭) a-vitakkaṃ a-vicāraṃ	🚫(V&V💭) No-directed-Thought, no-evaluation,
🌄😁🙂 samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ	🌄😁🙂 undistractable-lucidity—born rapture-&-pleasure,
🌗 dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.	🌗 second Jhāna (he) enters, dwells.

🚫😁 pītiyā ca virāgā	🚫😁(with) Rapture ** fading,
👁 upekkhako ca viharati	👁 Equanimously-observing ** (he) dwells,
(S&S🐘💭) sato ca sam-pajāno,	(S&S🐘💭) (he is a) Rememberer, (a) lucid-discerner,
🙂🚶 sukhañca kāyena paṭi-saṃ-vedeti,	🙂🚶 pleasure with-the-body (he) experiences,
yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti —	that those Noble-Ones declare -
‘upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ti	“(He is an) equanimous-observer (and a) Rememberer, (he has) pleasurable-abiding.”
🌖 tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.	🌖 third Jhāna (he) enters, dwells.



Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ	This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ	Thus developed, thus pursued,
diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihārāya saṃvattati.	In-this-very-life-(a)-happy-dwelling (it) leads-to.

(2. STED smd-asnd: āloka-saññaṃ leads to ñāṇa-dassanap-paṭi-lābhāya )

“Puna ca-paraṃ, bhante, bhikkhu	“Again, and-furthermore, Lord, a-monk,
āloka-saññaṃ manasi karoti,	Luminosity-perception: (his) mind attends.
Divā-saññaṃ adhiṭṭhāti—	daytime-perception (he is) resolved on.
yathā divā tathā rattiṃ,	as-by Day so-by night,
yathā rattiṃ tathā divā.	As-by-night so-by day,
Iti vivaṭena cetasā a-pariyonaddhena	(By means of an) *** open awareness, un-enveloped,
Sap-pabhāsaṃ cittaṃ bhāveti.	***-luminous mind, (he) develops.

Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ	This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ	Thus developed, thus pursued,
ñāṇa-dassanap-paṭi-lābhāya saṃvattati.	Knowledge-(and)-vision-****-acquisition (this) leads to.

(3. STED 31asb: 31 non-beautiful body parts for removal of kāma-rāga)

“Puna ca-paraṃ, bhante, bhikkhu

“Again, and-furthermore, Lord, a-monk,

Imam-eva kāyaṃ	(In) this-very body,
uddhaṃ pāda-talā	up (from the) feet-base,
adho kesa-matthakā	below head-hair-(on)-top,
Taca-pariyantaṃ	Skin-enclosed,
pūraṃ nāna-p-pakārassa A-sucino	Full-of many-*-things Im-pure.
paccavekkhati:	(he) reflects:
‘atthi imasmiṃ kāye	There-are in-this body:
kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco,	Head-hairs, body-hairs, nails, teeth, skin,
maṃsaṃ nhāru aṭṭhi aṭṭhi-miñjaṃ vakkaṃ,	flesh, tendons, bones, bone-marrow, kidneys,
hadayaṃ yakanaṃ kilomakaṃ pihakaṃ papphāsaṃ,	heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs,
antaṃ antaguṇaṃ udariyaṃ karīsaṃ,	Large-intestines, small-intestines, stomach, feces,
pittaṃ semhaṃ pubbo lohitaṃ sedo medo,	bile, phelgm, pus, blood, sweat, fat,
assu vasā kheḷo siṅghāṇikā lasikā muttan’ti.	tears, skin-oil, saliva, mucous, fluid-in-the-joints, (and) urine.


Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ	This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ	Thus developed, thus pursued,
Kāma-rāgap-pahānāya saṃvattati.	sensuality-(and)-lust’s-removal (this) leads-to.

(4. STED 9siv: stages of corpse decay, for removal of self and conceit Asmi-māna-samugghātāya)

“Puna ca-paraṃ, bhante, bhikkhu

“Again, and-furthermore, Lord, a-monk,

passeyya sarīraṃ	(he) should-see a-body
sivathikāya chaṭṭitaṃ	in-a-cemetery, cast-away,
Ekāha-mataṃ vā	One-day-after, or

Tīha-mataṃ vā	Three-days-after **,
uddhumātakaṃ	swollen,
vinīlakaṃ	(or) Turned-blue,

kākehi vā khajjamānaṃ	Crows ** devoured (it),
kulalehi vā khajjamānaṃ	Hawks ** devoured (it),
gijjhehi vā khajjamānaṃ	Vultures ** devoured (it),
sunakhehi vā khajjamānaṃ	Dogs ** devoured (it),
siṅgālehi vā khajjamānaṃ	Foxes ** devoured (it),

sukhassa ca pahānā	(with) Pleasure's ** abandoning,
dukkhassa ca pahānā	(with) pain's ** abandoning,
pubbeva so-manassa-do-manassānaṃ atthaṅgamā	(with) previous elated-mental-state-(and)-distressed-mental-states’ disappearance,
A-dukkham-a-sukhaṃ	Neither-pain nor-pleasure
👁🐘 Upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ	👁🐘 equanimous-observation-(and)-remembrance-purified,
🌕 catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati	🌕 fourth Jhāna (he) enters, dwells.



Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ	This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ	Thus developed, thus pursued,
aneka-dhātu-paṭi-vedhāya saṃvattati.	Many-elements; -(their)-full-penetration it-leads-to.
Imāni kho, bhante, pañca anussatiṭṭhānānī”ti.	These *, ****, (are the) five practices-to-be-recollected.

“Sādhu sādhu, ānanda.	Good! Good! Ānanda.

(6. Rememberful activities for sati and sampajāno)

satova seyyaṃ kappeti	Always-remembering [☸Dharma] (he) lies-down,

Idaṃ, ānanda, anussatiṭṭhānaṃ	This, Ānanda, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
