There Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna addressed the mendicants: |
āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti. |
āReverends, mendicants!ā |
āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato mahÄmoggallÄnassa paccassosuį¹. |
āReverend,ā they replied. |

āJust now, reverends, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind: |

KÄma-sahagatÄ saƱƱÄ-mana-sikÄrÄ samudÄcaranti. |
Sensual-pleasure-*** perceptions-and-attention [to those impure perceptions] assailed me. |
Atha kho maį¹, Ävuso, bhagavÄ iddhiyÄ upasaį¹

Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said: |
āmoggallÄna, moggallÄna. |
āMoggallÄna, MoggallÄna! |
MÄ, brÄhmaį¹a, paį¹hamaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ pamÄdo, |
Brahmin, do not neglect the first jhÄna! |
paį¹hame jhÄne cittaį¹ saį¹į¹hapehi, |

paį¹hame jhÄne cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, |
(in) first jhÄna, (the) mind (you should) make-it-singular, |

a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itās me.ā |

š mind has-become-singular, |

idha bhikkhu pÄ«tiyÄ ca virÄgÄ upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajÄno sukhaƱca kÄyena paį¹isaį¹vedeti, yaį¹ taį¹ ariyÄ Äcikkhanti: āupekkhako satimÄ sukhavihÄrÄ«āti tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. |
āWith the fading away of rapture, a mendicant enters and remains in the third jhÄna, where they meditate with equanimity, rememberful and aware, personally experiencing pleasure with the flesh and blood physical body of which the noble ones declare, āEquanimous and rememberful, one meditates in pleasure.ā |

This is called the third jhÄna.ā |

āidha bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahÄnÄ dukkhassa ca pahÄnÄ pubbeva somanassadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhÄsatipÄrisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. |
āItās when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, a mendicant enters and remains in the fourth jhÄna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and remembering. |
Idaį¹ vuccati catutthaį¹ jhÄnanāti. |
This is called the fourth jhÄna.ā |

What is the dimension of infinite space? |

āidha bhikkhu sabbaso rÅ«pasaƱƱÄnaį¹ samatikkamÄ paį¹ighasaƱƱÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ nÄnattasaƱƱÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ ananto ÄkÄsoti ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatanaį¹ upasampajja viharati. |
āItās when a mendicant—going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity—aware that āspace is infiniteā, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite space. |
Idaį¹ vuccati ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatananāti. |
This is called the dimension of infinite space.ā |

āidha bhikkhu sabbaso ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatanaį¹ samatikkamma anantaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹anti viƱƱÄį¹aƱcÄyatanaį¹ upasampajja viharati. |
āItās when a mendicant, going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that āconsciousness is infiniteā, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite consciousness. |

This is called the dimension of infinite consciousness.ā |

āidha bhikkhu sabbaso viƱƱÄį¹aƱcÄyatanaį¹ samatikkamma natthi kiƱcÄ«ti ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ upasampajja viharati. |
āItās when a mendicant, going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that āthere is nothing at allā, enters and remains in the dimension of nothingness. |
Idaį¹ vuccati ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄyatananāti. |
This is called the dimension of nothingness.ā |
