9. VesÄlÄ«sutta |
9. At VesÄlÄ« |
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹— |
So I have heard. |
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. |
At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. |
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ anekapariyÄyena asubhakathaį¹ katheti, asubhÄya vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsati, asubhabhÄvanÄya vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsati. |
Now at that time the Buddha spoke in many ways to the monks about the meditation on ugliness. He praised the meditation on ugliness and its development. |
Atha kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: |
Then the Buddha said to the monks: |
āicchÄmahaį¹, bhikkhave, aįøįøhamÄsaį¹ paį¹isallÄ«yituį¹. |
āmonks, I wish to go on retreat for a fortnight. |
NÄmhi kenaci upasaį¹

No-one should approach me, except for the one who brings my alms-food.ā |
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paį¹issutvÄ nÄssudha koci bhagavantaį¹ upasaį¹

āYes, sir,ā replied those monks. And no-one approached him, except for the one who brought the alms-food. |
Atha kho te bhikkhū: |
Then those monks thought: |
ābhagavÄ anekapariyÄyena asubhakathaį¹ katheti, asubhÄya vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsati, asubhabhÄvanÄya vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsatÄ«āti anekÄkÄravokÄraį¹ asubhabhÄvanÄnuyogamanuyuttÄ viharanti. |
āThe Buddha spoke in many ways about the meditation on ugliness. He praised the meditation on ugliness and its development.ā They committed themselves to developing the many different aspects of the meditation on ugliness. |
Te iminÄ kÄyena aį¹į¹Ä«yamÄnÄ harÄyamÄnÄ jigucchamÄnÄ satthahÄrakaį¹ pariyesanti. |
Becoming horrified, repelled, and disgusted with this body, they looked for someone to slit their wrists. |
Dasapi bhikkhÅ« ekÄhena satthaį¹ Äharanti, vÄ«sampi ā¦ pe ā¦ tiį¹sampi bhikkhÅ« ekÄhena satthaį¹ Äharanti. |
Each day ten, twenty, or thirty monks slit their wrists. |
Atha kho bhagavÄ tassa aįøįøhamÄsassa accayena paį¹isallÄnÄ vuį¹į¹hito Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ Ämantesi: |
Then after a fortnight had passed, the Buddha came out of retreat and addressed Änanda: |
ākiį¹ nu kho, Änanda, tanubhÅ«to viya bhikkhusaį¹

āÄnanda, why does the monk Saį¹ gha seem so diminished?ā |
āTathÄ hi pana, bhante, ābhagavÄ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ anekapariyÄyena asubhakathaį¹ katheti, asubhÄya vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsati, asubhabhÄvanÄya vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsatÄ«āti anekÄkÄravokÄraį¹ asubhabhÄvanÄnuyogamanuyuttÄ viharanti. |
Änanda told the Buddha all that had happened, and said: |
Te iminÄ kÄyena aį¹į¹Ä«yamÄnÄ harÄyamÄnÄ jigucchamÄnÄ satthahÄrakaį¹ pariyesanti. |
|
Dasapi bhikkhÅ« ekÄhena satthaį¹ Äharanti, vÄ«sampi bhikkhÅ« ā¦ tiį¹sampi bhikkhÅ« ekÄhena satthaį¹ Äharanti. |

āSir, the monk Saį¹ gha has assembled. |
