So I have heard. |
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. |
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambi, in Ghositaās Monastery. |
Tena kho pana samayena dve pabbajitÄ— |
Now at that time two renunciates— |
muį¹įøiyo ca paribbÄjako jÄliyo ca dÄrupattikantevÄsÄ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. |
the wanderer Muį¹įøiya and JÄliya the pupil of DÄrupattika—came to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him. |
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho te dve pabbajitÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: |
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they stood to one side and said to the Buddha: |
ākiį¹ nu kho, Ävuso gotama, taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«raį¹, udÄhu aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranāti? |
āReverend Gotama, are the soul and the body the same thing, or they are different things?ā |
āTena hÄvuso, suį¹Ätha sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. |
āWell then, reverends, listen and pay close attention, I will speak.ā |
āEvamÄvusoāti kho te dve pabbajitÄ bhagavato paccassosuį¹. |
āYes, reverend,ā they replied. |

āidhÄvuso, tathÄgato loke uppajjati arahaį¹, sammÄsambuddho ā¦ pe ā¦ |
āTake the case when a Realized One arises in the world, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha ā¦ |
Evaį¹ kho, Ävuso, bhikkhu sÄ«lasampanno hoti. |
Thatās how a mendicant is accomplished in ethics. ā¦ |

(7sb ā 1-3 šššµļøš¹) Seeing that the hindrances have been given up in them, |
pÄ-mojjaį¹ jÄyati, |
virtuous-mirth is born. |
(7sb ā 4. š) pa-muditassa pÄ«ti jÄyati, |
(7sb ā 4. š) (For one with) virtuous-mirth rapture (is) born. |
(7sb ā 5. š) pÄ«ti-manassa kÄyo passambhati, |
(7sb ā 5. š) (with) en-raptured-mind (the) body (is) pacified. |
(7sb ā 5.5 š) passaddha-kÄyo sukhaį¹ vedeti, |
(7sb ā 5.5 š) (with) pacified-body, {they experience} pleasure. |
(7sb ā 6. š) sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati. |
(7sb ā 6. š) (For one in) pleasure, (the) mind becomes undistractible-&-lucid. |

ātaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranāti vÄ āaƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranāti vÄti. |
āThe soul and the body are the same thingā or āThe soul and the body are different thingsā?ā |
Yo so, Ävuso, bhikkhu evaį¹ jÄnÄti evaį¹ passati, kallaį¹ tassetaį¹ vacanÄya: |
āIt would, reverend.ā |
ātaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranāti vÄ āaƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranāti vÄti. |
