♦ 161. atha kho māro pāpimā |
Then Māra the Evil One, |
bhagavato santike imā nibbejanīyā gāthāyo abhāsitvā |
having spoken these verses of disappointment in the presence of the Blessed One, |
tamhā ṭhānā apakkamma bhagavato avidūre pathaviyaṃ pallaṅkena nisīdi |
went away from that spot and sat down cross-legged on the ground not far from the Blessed One, |
tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno kaṭṭhena bhūmiṃ vilikhanto. |
silent, dismayed, with his shoulders drooping, downcast, brooding, unable to speak, scratching the ground with a stick. |
atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro yena māro pāpimā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; |
Then Māra’s daughters—Taṇhā, Aratī, and Ragā—approached Māra the Evil One |
upasaṅkamitvā māraṃ pāpimantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsiṃsu — |
and addressed him in verse: |
♦ “kenāsi dummano tāta, |
“Why (are you) despondent, father? |
purisaṃ kaṃ nu socasi. |
{Who’s the} man (for whom you) grieve? |
♦ mayaṃ taṃ rāga-pāsena, |
We’ll [catch him with the] snare-of-lust |
āraññamiva kuñjaraṃ. |
[As they catch the] forest elephant. |
♦ bandhitvā ānayissāma, |
(We’ll) bind (him) [tightly] (and) bring-him-back, |
vasago te bhavissatī”ti. |
(and) under-{your}-control ** (he will) become . |

♦ “arahaṃ sugato loke, |
“The Arahant, the-Fortunate-One (in the) world, |
na rāgena su-vānayo. |
Is not easily drawn by means of lust. |
♦ māra-dheyyaṃ atik-kanto, |
Māra’s-realm (He has) gone-beyond : |
tasmā socām-ahaṃ bhusan”ti. |
Therefore I sorrow so bitterly.” |
♦ atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; |
Then Māra’s daughters—Taṇhā, Aratī, and Ragā— |
upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ — |
approached the Blessed One and said to him: |
“pāde te, samaṇa, paricāremā”ti. |
“We serve at your feet, ascetic.” |
atha kho bhagavā na manasākāsi, |
But the Blessed One paid no attention, |
yathā taṃ an-uttare upadhi-saṅ-khaye vimutto. |
as (he was in the) un-surpassed extinction-of-acquisitions liberation. |
♦ atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro |
Then Māra’s daughters—Taṇhā, Aratī, and Ragā— |
ekamantaṃ apakkamma evaṃ samacintesuṃ — |
went off to the side and took counsel: |
“uccāvacā kho purisānaṃ adhippāyā. |
“Men’s tastes are diverse. |
yaṃnūna mayaṃ ekasataṃ ekasataṃ kumārivaṇṇasataṃ abhinimmineyyāmā”ti. |
Suppose we each manifest ourselves in the form of a hundred maidens.” [ |
atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro ekasataṃ ekasataṃ kumārivaṇṇasataṃ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; |
Then Māra’s three daughters, each manifesting herself in the form of a hundred maidens, approached the Blessed One |
upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ — |
and said to him: |
“pāde te, samaṇa, paricāremā”ti. |
“We serve at your feet, ascetic.” |
tampi bhagavā na manasākāsi, |
But the Blessed One paid no attention, |
yathā taṃ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. |
as he was liberated in the unsurpassed extinction of acquisitions. |

Then Māra’s daughters went off to the side and again took counsel: |

♦ atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... yaṃnūna mayaṃ ekasataṃ ekasataṃ sakiṃ vijātavaṇṇasataṃ abhinimmineyyāmāti. atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... sakiṃ vijātavaṇṇasataṃ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ — “pāde te, samaṇa, paricāremā”ti. tampi bhagavā na manasākāsi, |
… in the form of a hundred women who have given birth once … … in the form of a hundred women who have given birth twice … in the form of a hundred women of middle age … in the form of a hundred old women, ... |
yathā taṃ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. |
...in the unsurpassed extinction of acquisitions. |
♦ atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... yaṃnūna mayaṃ ekasataṃ ekasataṃ duvijātavaṇṇasataṃ abhinimmineyyāmāti. atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... duvijātavaṇṇasataṃ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā ... pe ... yathā taṃ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... majjhimitthivaṇṇasataṃ abhinimmineyyāmāti. atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... majjhimitthivaṇṇasataṃ abhinimminitvā ... pe |

♦ atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... mahitthivaṇṇasataṃ abhinimmineyyāmāti. atha kho taṇhā ca ... pe ... mahitthivaṇṇasataṃ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā ... pe ... anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. |
atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro ekamantaṃ apakkamma etadavocuṃ — |
Then Māra’s daughters—Taṇhā, Aratī, and Ragā—went off to the side and said: |
saccaṃ kira no pitā avoca — |
“What our father told us is true: |
♦ “arahaṃ sugato loke, |
“The Arahant, the-Fortunate-One (in the) world, |
na rāgena suvānayo. |
Is not easily drawn by means of lust. |
♦ māradheyyaṃ atikkanto, |
Māra’s-realm (He has) gone-beyond : |
tasmā socāmahaṃ bhusan”ti. |
Therefore I sorrow so bitterly.” |
♦ “yañhi mayaṃ samaṇaṃ vā brāhmaṇaṃ vā a-vīta-rāgaṃ |
“If we had assailed with such tactics any ascetic or brahmin who was not devoid of lust, |
iminā upakkamena upakkameyyāma hadayaṃ vāssa phaleyya, |
either his heart would have burst, |
uṇhaṃ lohitaṃ vā mukhato uggaccheyya, |
or he would have vomited hot blood from his mouth, |
ummādaṃ vā pāpuṇeyya cittakkhepaṃ vā. |
or he would have gone mad or become mentally deranged; |
seyyathā vā pana naḷo harito luto ussussati visussati milāyati; |
or else he would have dried up and withered away and become shrivelled, |
evameva ussusseyya visusseyya milāyeyyā”ti. |
just as a green reed that has been mowed down would dry up and wither away and become shrivelled.” |
♦ atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro |
Then Māra’s daughters—Taṇhā, Aratī, and Ragā— |
yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu. |
approached the Blessed One and stood to one side. |
ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho taṇhā māradhītā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi — |
Standing to one side, Māra’s daughter Taṇhā addressed the Blessed One in verse: |
♦ “sokā-vatiṇṇo nu vanamhi jhāyasi, |
“(Is it because you are) sunk in sorrow, (that you are in the) woods doing-jhāna? |
♦ vittaṃ nu jīno uda patthayāno. |
{is it Because} wealth ** (you’ve) lost or (you) pine (for it)? |
♦ āguṃ nu gāmasmimakāsi kiñci, |
{are you} guilty [of crime committed] (in the) village? |
♦ kasmā janena na karosi sakkhiṃ. |
Why don’t you make friends with people? |
♦ sakkhī na sampajjati kenaci te”ti. |
Why don’t you form any intimate ties?” |
[The Blessed One:] |

♦ “atthassa pattiṃ hadayassa santiṃ, |
Goal's-attainment (and the) heart's peace, |
♦ jetvāna senaṃ piya-sāta-rūpaṃ. |
(having) conquered (the) army (of the) agreeable-&-satisfactory-forms. |
♦ eko'haṃ jhāyaṃ sukham-anu-bodhiṃ, |
alone,-I (do) jhāna, [and discover] pleasure-of-awakening, |
♦ tasmā janena na karomi sakkhiṃ. |
Therefore I don’t make friends with people, |
♦ sakkhī na sampajjati kenaci me”ti. |
Nor will I form any intimate ties.” |
♦ atha kho arati VAR māradhītā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi — |
Then Māra’s daughter Aratī addressed the Blessed One in verse: |
♦ “kathaṃ vihārī-bahu-lodha bhikkhu, |
“How does a bhikkhu here often dwell |
♦ pañc'-ogha-tiṇṇo(,) atarīdha chaṭṭhaṃ. |
[That,] five-floods-crossed, he here has crossed the sixth? |
♦ kathaṃ jhāyiṃ bahulaṃ kāma-saññā, |
How (does he) do-jhāna [so that] frequent sensual-perceptions |
♦ pari-bāhirā honti aladdha yo tan”ti. |
Are kept at bay (and) fail to grip him? |
[The Blessed One:] |
[The Blessed One:] |
♦ “passaddha-kāyo su-vimutta-citto, |
“pacified-body, well-liberated-mind, |
♦ a-saṅkharāno satimā an-oko. |
Not-generating, mindful, home-less, |
♦ aññāya dhammaṃ a-vitakka-jhāyī, |
Knowing Dhamma, (in) no-thought jhāna, |
♦ na kuppati na sarati na thino. |
He does not erupt, or drift, or stiffen. |
♦ “evaṃ-vihārī-bahulodha bhikkhu, |
“thus-dwelling-often-here, (a) monk, |
♦ pañc'-ogha-tiṇṇo atarīdha chaṭṭhaṃ. |
(With) five-floods-crossed, (he here has) crossed the sixth. |
♦ evaṃ jhāyiṃ bahulaṃ kāma-saññā, |
thus (in) jhāna, frequent sensual-perceptions |
♦ paribāhirā honti aladdha yo tan”ti. |
Are kept at bay and fail to grip him.” |
♦ atha kho ragā VAR māradhītā bhagavato santike gāthāya ajjhabhāsi — |
Then Māra’s daughter Ragā addressed the Blessed One in verse: |
♦ “acchejja taṇhaṃ gaṇa-saṅgha-cārī, |
“He has cut off craving, faring with his group and order; |
♦ addhā carissanti VAR bahū ca saddhā. |
Surely many other beings will cross. |
♦ bahuṃ vatāyaṃ janataṃ an-oko, |
Alas, this homeless one will snatch many people |
♦ acchejja nessati maccu-rājassa pāran”ti. |
And lead them away beyond the King of Death. |

♦ “nayanti ve mahā-vīrā, |
“(they) lead, those great-heroes, |
sad-dhammena tathāgatā. |
(by means of the) true-Dhamma, (the) Tathāgatas . |
♦ dhammena nayamānānaṃ, |
[When,] (by means of) Dhamma (they are) leading, |
kā usūyā vijānatan”ti. |
What envy [can there be] (in those who) understand?” |
♦ atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro yena māro pāpimā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu. |
Then Māra’s daughters—Taṇhā, Aratī, and Ragā—approached Māra the Evil One. |
addasā kho māro pāpimā taṇhañca aratiñca ragañca māradhītaro dūratova āgacchantiyo. disvāna gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi — |
Māra saw them coming in the distance and addressed them in verses: |
♦ “bālā kumudanāḷehi, |
“Fools! With the stalks of lotus flowers, |
pabbataṃ abhimatthatha VAR. |
(a) mountain (You) tried to batter. |
♦ giriṃ nakhena khanatha, |
(a) mountain (with your) nails (you try to) dig (up), |
ayo dantehi khādatha. |
iron (with your) teeth (you try to) chew. |
♦ “selaṃva sirasūhacca VAR, |
“As if, having lifted a rock with your head, |
pātāle gādhamesatha. |
You sought a foothold in the abyss; |
♦ khāṇuṃva urasāsajja, |
As if you struck a stump with your breast, |
nibbijjāpetha gotamā”ti. |
You part from Gotama disappointed.” |
♦ “daddallamānā āgañchuṃ, |
glittering with beauty (they had) come (to him)— |
taṇhā ca aratī ragā. |
[3 sisters named] craving, dicord, passion. |
♦ tā tattha panudī satthā, |
But the Teacher swept them away right there |
tūlaṃ bhaṭṭhaṃva māluto”ti. |
As the wind, a fallen cotton tuft. |
♦ tatiyo vaggo. |
