sāvatthi-nidānaṃ. |

“ye hi keci, bhikkhave, |
“Bhikkhus, |
samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā |
those ascetics and brahmins |
anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussaramānā |
who recollect their manifold past abodes |
anussaranti sabbete pañcupādānakkhandhe |
all recollect the five aggregates subject to clinging |
anussaranti etesaṃ vā aññataraṃ. |
or a certain one among them."" |
katame pañca? |
What five? |
‘evaṃrūpo ahosiṃ atītamaddhānan’ti — iti vā hi, |
2“When recollecting thus, |
bhikkhave, |
bhikkhus: |
anussaramāno rūpaṃyeva anussarati. |
‘I had such form in the past,’ it is just form that one recollects. |
‘evaṃvedano ahosiṃ atītamaddhānan’ti — iti vā hi, |
When recollecting: |
bhikkhave, |
‘I had such a feeling in the past,’ it is just feeling that one recollects. |
anussaramāno vedanaṃyeva anussarati. |

‘I had such a perception in the past,’ it is just perception that one recollects. |

Deformed by cold, |
kena ruppati? |
deformed by heat, |
sītenapi ruppati, |
deformed by hunger, |
uṇhenapi ruppati, |
deformed by thirst, |
jighacchāyapi ruppati, |
deformed by contact with flies, |
pipāsāyapi ruppati, |
mosquitoes, |
ḍaṃsamakasavātātapasarīsapasamphassenapi VAR ruppati. |

ruppatīti kho, |

and serpents. |
tasmā ‘rūpan’ti vuccati. |
‘It is deformed,’ bhikkhus, |
therefore it is called form. | |
♦ “kiñ-ca, bhikkhave, vedanaṃ vadetha? |
“And-why, monks, [is] feeling called [by that term]? |
Vedayatī-ti kho, bhikkhave, |
‘It feels,’ *** monks, |
tasmā ‘vedanā’ti vuccati. |
therefore 'feeling' [is what it is] called. |
kiñca vedayati? |
And-what (does it) feel? |
sukham-pi vedayati, |
pleasure-** (it) feels, |
dukkham-pi vedayati, |
pain-** (it) feels, |
a-dukkham-a-sukham-pi vedayati. |
neither-pain-nor-pleasure (it) feels. |
Vedayatī-ti kho, bhikkhave, |
‘It feels,’ *** monks, |
tasmā ‘vedanā’ti vuccati. |
therefore 'feeling' [is what it is] called. |
5“And why, | |

♦ “kiñca, |
do you call it perception? |
bhikkhave, |
‘It perceives,’ bhikkhus, |
saññaṃ vadetha? |
therefore it is called perception. |
sañjānātīti kho, |
And what does it perceive? |
bhikkhave, |
It perceives blue, |
tasmā ‘saññā’ti vuccati. |
it perceives yellow, |
kiñca sañjānāti? |
it perceives red, |
nīlampi sañjānāti, |
it perceives white. |
pītakampi sañjānāti, |
‘It perceives,’ bhikkhus, |
lohitakampi sañjānāti, |
therefore it is called perception. |
odātampi sañjānāti. |

sañjānātīti kho, |
6“And why, |
bhikkhave, |
bhikkhus, |
tasmā ‘saññā’ti vuccati. |
do you call them volitional formations? |
‘They construct the conditioned,’ bhikkhus, |

therefore they are called volitional formations.112 " |
bhikkhave, |
" And what is the conditioned that they construct? |
saṅkhāre vadetha? |
They construct conditioned form as form; |
saṅkhatamabhisaṅkharontīti kho, |

they construct conditioned perception as perception; |

they construct conditioned consciousness as consciousness. |
vedanaṃ vedanattāya saṅkhatamabhisaṅkharonti, |
‘They construct the conditioned,’ bhikkhus, |
saññaṃ saññattāya saṅkhatamabhisaṅkharonti, |
therefore they are called volitional formations. |
saṅkhāre saṅkhārattāya saṅkhatamabhisaṅkharonti, |

viññāṇaṃ viññāṇattāya saṅkhatamabhisaṅkharonti. |
7“And why, |
saṅkhatamabhisaṅkharontīti kho, |
bhikkhus, |
bhikkhave, |
do you call it consciousness? |
tasmā ‘saṅkhārā’ti vuccati. |
‘It cognizes, |
’ bhikkhus, |
♦ “kiñca, |
therefore it is called consciousness. |
bhikkhave, |
And what does it cognize? |
viññāṇaṃ vadetha? |
It cognizes sour, |
vijānātīti kho, |
it cognizes bitter, |
bhikkhave, |
it cognizes pungent, |
tasmā ‘viññāṇan’ti vuccati. |
it cognizes sweet, |
kiñca vijānāti? |
it cognizes sharp, |
ambilampi vijānāti, |
it cognizes mild, |
tittakampi vijānāti, |
it cognizes salty, |
kaṭukampi vijānāti, |
it cognizes bland. |
madhurampi vijānāti, |
‘It cognizes,’ bhikkhus, |
khārikampi vijānāti, |
therefore it is called consciousness.114 "" |
akhārikampi vijānāti, |

loṇikampi vijānāti, |
8“Therein, |
aloṇikampi vijānāti. |
bhikkhus, |
vijānātīti kho, |
the instructed noble disciple reflects thus: |
bhikkhave, |
‘I am now being devoured by form.115 "" In the past too I was devoured by form in the very same way that I am now being devoured by present form. |
tasmā ‘viññāṇan’ti vuccati. |
If I were to seek delight in future form, |
then in the future too I shall be devoured by form in the very same way that I am now being devoured by present form.’ Having reflected thus, | |
♦ “tatra, |
he becomes indifferent towards past form, |
bhikkhave, |
he does not seek delight in future form, |
sutavā ariyasāvako iti paṭisañcikkhati — ‘ahaṃ kho etarahi rūpena khajjāmi. |
and he is practising for revulsion towards present form, |
atītampāhaṃ addhānaṃ evameva rūpena khajjiṃ, |
for its fading away and cessation. |
seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena rūpena khajjāmi. |

ahañceva kho pana anāgataṃ rūpaṃ abhinandeyyaṃ, |
9“[He reflects thus: |
anāgatampāhaṃ addhānaṃ evameva rūpena khajjeyyaṃ, |
] ‘I am now being devoured by feeling.’ … [88] … ‘I am now being devoured by perception.’ … ‘I am now being devoured by volitional formations.’ … ‘I am now being devoured by consciousness. |
seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena rūpena khajjāmī’ti. |
In the past too I was devoured by consciousness in the very same way that I am now being devoured by present consciousness. |
so iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītasmiṃ rūpasmiṃ anapekkho hoti; |
If I were to seek delight in future consciousness, |
anāgataṃ rūpaṃ nābhinandati; |
then in the future too I shall be devoured by consciousness in the very same way that I am now being devoured by present consciousness.’ Having reflected thus, |
paccuppannassa rūpassa nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti. |
he becomes indifferent towards past consciousness, |
he does not seek delight in future consciousness, | |

is form permanent or impermanent? |
so iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītāya vedanāya anapekkho hoti; |
… Is feeling … perception … volitional formations … [89] consciousness permanent or impermanent?”116 "" - “Impermanent, |
anāgataṃ vedanaṃ nābhinandati; |
venerable sir.” - “Is what is impermanent suffering or happiness?” - “Suffering, |
paccuppannāya vedanāya nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti. |

♦ “‘ahaṃ kho etarahi saññāya khajjāmi ... |
and subject to change fit to be regarded thus: |

‘This is mine, |
ahaṃ kho etarahi saṅkhārehi khajjāmi. |
this I am, |
atītampāhaṃ addhānaṃ evameva saṅkhārehi khajjiṃ, |
this is my self’?” - “No, |
seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannehi saṅkhārehi khajjāmīti. |
venerable sir.” |
ahañceva kho pana anāgate saṅkhāre abhinandeyyaṃ; |

anāgatampāhaṃ addhānaṃ evameva saṅkhārehi khajjeyyaṃ, |
11“Therefore, |
seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannehi saṅkhārehi khajjāmī’ti. |
bhikkhus, |
so iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītesu saṅkhāresu anapekkho hoti; |
any kind of form whatsoever … Any kind of feeling whatsoever … Any kind of perception whatsoever … Any kind of volitional formations whatsoever … Any kind of consciousness whatsoever, |
anāgate saṅkhāre nābhinandati; |
whether past, |
paccuppannānaṃ saṅkhārānaṃ nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti. |
future, |
or present, | |
♦ “‘ahaṃ kho etarahi viññāṇena khajjāmi. |
internal or external, |
atītampi addhānaṃ evameva viññāṇena khajjiṃ, |
gross or subtle, |
seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena viññāṇena khajjāmi. |
inferior or superior, |
ahañceva kho pana anāgataṃ viññāṇaṃ abhinandeyyaṃ; |
far or near, |
anāgatampāhaṃ addhānaṃ evameva viññāṇena khajjeyyaṃ, |
all consciousness should be seen as it really is with correct wisdom thus: |
seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena viññāṇena khajjāmī’ti. |
‘This is not mine, |
so iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītasmiṃ viññāṇasmiṃ anapekkho hoti; |
this I am not, |
anāgataṃ viññāṇaṃ nābhinandati; |
this is not my self.’ |
paccuppannassa viññāṇassa nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti. |

♦ “taṃ kiṃ maññatha, |
bhikkhus, |
bhikkhave, |
a noble disciple who dismantles and does not build up; |
rūpaṃ niccaṃ vā aniccaṃ vā”ti? |
who abandons and does not cling; |
“aniccaṃ, |
who scatters and does not amass; |
bhante”. |
who extinguishes and does not kindle.117 "" |
“yaṃ panāniccaṃ dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā”ti? |

13“And what is it that he dismantles and does not build up? |
bhante”. |
He dismantles form and does not build it up. |
“yaṃ panāniccaṃ dukkhaṃ vipariṇāmadhammaṃ, |
He dismantles feeling … perception … volitional formations … consciousness and does not build it up. |
kallaṃ nu taṃ samanupassituṃ — ‘etaṃ mama, |

14“And what is it that he abandons and does not cling to? |
eso me attā’”ti? |
He abandons form and does not cling to it. |
“no hetaṃ, |
He abandons feeling … perception … volitional formations … consciousness and does not cling to it. |

16“And what is it that he extinguishes and does not kindle? |
“yaṃ panāniccaṃ, |
He extinguishes form and does not kindle it. |
dukkhaṃ vā taṃ sukhaṃ vā”ti? |
He extinguishes feeling … perception … volitional formations … consciousness and does not kindle it. |
“dukkhaṃ, |

17“Seeing thus, |
“yaṃ panāniccaṃ dukkhaṃ vipariṇāmadhammaṃ, |
bhikkhus, |
kallaṃ nu taṃ samanupassituṃ — ‘etaṃ mama, |
the instructed noble disciple experiences revulsion towards form, |
esohamasmi, |
revulsion towards feeling, |
eso me attā’”ti? |
revulsion towards perception, |
“no hetaṃ, |
revulsion towards volitional formations, |
bhante”. |
revulsion towards consciousness. |
“tasmātiha, |
Experiencing revulsion, |
bhikkhave, |
he becomes dispassionate. |
yaṃ kiñci rūpaṃ atītānāgatapaccuppannaṃ ajjhattaṃ vā bahiddhā vā oḷārikaṃ vā sukhumaṃ vā hīnaṃ vā paṇītaṃ vā yaṃ dūre santike vā, |
Through dispassion [his mind] is liberated. |
sabbaṃ rūpaṃ — ‘netaṃ mama, |
When it is liberated there comes the knowledge: |
nesohamasmi, |
‘It’s liberated.’ He understands: |
na meso attā’ti evametaṃ yathābhūtaṃ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṃ. |
‘Destroyed is birth, |
yā kāci vedanā... |
the holy life has been lived, |
yā kāci saññā... |
what had to be done has been done, |
ye keci saṅkhārā... |
there is no more for this state of being.’ |
yaṃ kiñci viññāṇaṃ atītānāgatapaccuppannaṃ ... |
