Thus have I heard. |
一時,佛遊婆耆瘦,在鼉山怖 林鹿野園中。 |
At one time the Buddha, who was dwelling among the Bhaggas, was staying on Crocodile Hill in the Deer Park at Bhesakaḷā Grove. |
爾時,尊者大目揵連遊摩竭 國,在善知識村中。 |
At that time Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, who was dwelling in the country of Magadha, was staying in the village of Kallavāḷamutta. |
於是,尊者大目揵連獨 安靜處宴坐思惟而便睡眠。 |
Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, while sitting in meditation in a secluded and quiet place, was drowsing off. |
世尊遙知尊者 大目揵連獨安靜處宴坐思惟而便睡眠。 |
The World-honored One realized from afar that Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, sitting in meditation in a secluded and quiet place, was drowsing off. |
世尊知已,即入如其像定,以如其像定,猶 若力士屈申臂頃,從婆耆瘦鼉山怖林鹿 野園中忽沒不現,往摩竭國善知識村尊 者大目揵連前。 |
Having realized this, the World-honored One entered an appropriate concentration such that, by means of this appropriate concentration, just as [easily and swiftly] a strong man might bend or stretch his arm, he disappeared from the Deer Park at Bhesakaḷā Grove on Crocodile Hill among the Bhaggas and appeared before Venerable Mahāmoggallāna in the village of Kallavāḷamutta in the country of Magadha. |
於是,世尊從定而寤,告曰: |
Then the World-honored One emerged from [the state of] concentration and said, |
「大目揵連!汝著睡眠。 |
“Mahāmoggallāna, you are stuck in drowsiness. |
大目揵連!汝著睡眠。」 |
Mahāmoggallāna, you are stuck in drowsiness.” |
尊者大目揵連白世尊曰: |
Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to the World-honored One, |
「唯然。世尊!」 |
“Yes, indeed, World-honored One.” |
佛復告 曰: |
The Buddha said further: |
「大目揵連!如所相著睡眠,汝莫修彼 相,亦莫廣布,如是睡眠便可得滅。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, whatever [meditation] sign ( nimitta) makes you become stuck in drowsiness, do not develop that sign, do not make much of it. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome. |
若汝睡 眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當隨本所聞法,隨 而受持廣布誦習,如是睡眠便可得滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should recite in full the teachings as you have previously heard and memorized them. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome. |
若 汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當隨本所聞 法,隨而受持為他廣說,如是睡眠便可得 滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should explain in full to others the teachings as you have previously heard and memorized them. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome. |
若汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當隨本 所聞法,隨而受持、心念、心思,如是睡眠便可 得滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness has not been overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should ponder and reflect in your mind on the teachings as you have previously heard them and memorized them. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome.119 |
若汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當 以兩手捫摸於耳,如是睡眠便可得滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness has not been overcome, Mahā-moggallāna, you should pull on your earlobes with both hands. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome. |
「若汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當以冷水 澡洗面目及灑身體,如是睡眠便可得滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should bathe your face and eyes with cold water and sprinkle your body with it. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome. |
若汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當從室出, 外觀四方,瞻視星宿,如是睡眠便可 得 滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should go out of the dwelling, look to the four directions and gaze up at the constellations. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome.120 |
若汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當從室出, 而至屋頭,露地經行,守護諸根,心安在內, 於後前想,如是睡眠便可得滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should go out of the dwelling, go in front of it, and practice walking meditation out in the open, with your sense faculties guarded and the mind quietly established within, being perceptive of what is in front and behind. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome. |
若汝睡眠 故不滅者,大目揵連!當捨經行道,至經行 道頭,敷尼師檀,結跏趺坐,如是睡眠便可 得滅。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should leave off walking meditation, go to the end of the meditation path, spread your sitting mat, and sit down cross-legged. In this way the drowsiness may be overcome.121 |
若汝睡眠故不滅者,大目揵連!當還 入室,四疊優多羅僧以敷床上,襞僧伽梨 作枕,右脇而臥,足足相累,心作明想,立正 念正智,常欲起想。 |
If for some reason your drowsiness is not overcome, Mahāmoggallāna, you should go back into the dwelling, fold your outer robe into four and spread it on the bed, fold the inner robe to use as a pillow, and lie down on your right side, one foot on the other, arousing the perception of light in the mind, establishing right mindfulness and right comprehension, constantly with the thought of rising again.122 |
「大目揵連!莫計床樂眠 臥安快,莫貪財利,莫著名譽。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, do not indulge in reclining peacefully in bed. Do not desire gain. Do not be attached to fame. |
所以者何? |
Why is that? |
我 說一切法不可與會,亦說與會。 |
I shall tell you all the conditions with which one should not associate and I shall tell you [the conditions with which] one should associate.123 |
大目揵連! 我說何法不可與會? |
Mahāmoggallāna, what are the conditions of which I say one should not associate with? |
大目揵連!若道俗法 共合會者,我說此法不可與會。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, close association with conditions of the common worldly way: I say, that one should not associate with such conditions. |
大目揵連! 若道俗法共合會者,便多有所說,若多有 所說者,則便有調,若有調者,便心不息。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, by close association with conditions of the common worldly way there will be much talk. If there is much talk, there is agitation. If there is agitation, the mind is not at ease. |
大 目揵連!若心不息者,便心離定。大目揵連! 是故我說不可與會。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, if the mind is not at ease, then the mind is bereft of concentration. For this reason, Mahā-moggallāna, I say that one should not associate with these. |
大目揵連!我說何法 可與共會? |
Mahāmoggallāna, what are the conditions of which I say one should associate with? |
大目揵連!彼無事處,我說此法 可與共會,山林樹下空安靜處,高巖石室寂 無音聲,遠離,無惡,無有人民,隨順宴坐。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, secluded places: I say that one should associate with these conditions. Beneath trees in mountain forests, empty and peaceful places, high crags and rocky caves without noise, remote places free of evil, free of people, places conducive to meditation: |
大 目揵連!我說此法可與共會。 |
Mahā-moggallāna, I say that one should associate with these conditions. |
「大目揵連!汝 若入村行乞食者,當以厭利,厭供養、恭敬, 汝若於利、供養、恭敬心作厭已,便入村乞 食。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, if you enter the village to beg for almsfood, you should do so [with a mind] disenchanted with gain, disenchanted with offerings and homage. Only when your mind has become disenchanted with gain, offerings, and homage should you enter the village to beg for almsfood. |
大目揵連!莫以高大意入村乞食。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, do not enter the village to beg for almsfood with a proud state of mind. |
所以 者何? |
Why is that? |
諸長者家有如是事,比丘來乞食, 令長者不作意,比丘便作是念: |
Householder families are busy with domestic affairs and when a monk comes begging for almsfood, a householder may not pay attention to him. Then the monk thinks, |
『誰壞我長 者家?所以者何? |
“Who has spoiled my [relationship] with the householder in this house? Why is that? |
我入長者家,長者不作意。』 |
When I enter the householder’s house, the householder does not pay attention [to me].” |
因是生憂,因憂生調,因調生心不息,因 心不息,心便離定。 |
Because of this sadness arises; because of sadness there is agitation; because of agitation the mind is not at ease; and because the mind is not at ease, the mind is bereft of concentration. |
大目揵連!汝說法時莫 以諍說,若諍說者,便多有所說,因多說故, 則便生調,因生調故,便心不息,因心不息 故,便心離定。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, when you teach the Dharma, do not speak in a disputatious way. If there is disputation, there will be much talk. Because much talk, agitation arises; because of agitation, the mind is not at ease; and because the mind is not at ease, the mind is bereft of concentration. |
大目揵連!汝說法時莫強,說 法如師子。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, when you teach the Dharma, do not be forceful but teach the Dharma [unperturbed,] like a lion. |
大 目揵 連!汝說法時,下意說法, 捨力、滅力、破壞於力,當以不強,說法如師 子。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, when you teach the Dharma, teach it humbly; abandon force, extinguish force, destroy force. Teach the Dharma without being forceful, teach the Dharma [unperturbed,] like a lion. |
大目揵連!當學如是。」 |
Mahāmoggallāna, you should train like this. |
爾時,尊者大目揵 連即從坐起,偏袒著衣,叉手向佛,白曰: |
At that time Venerable Mahāmoggallāna rose from his seat, arranged his robe to bare one shoulder, extended his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said, |
「世 尊!云何比丘得至究竟,究竟白淨、究竟梵 行、究竟梵行訖?」 |
“World-honored One, how does a monk attain the ultimate, the ultimate purity, the ultimate holy life, the ultimate completion of the holy life?” |
世尊告曰: |
The World-honored One said:124 |
「大目揵連!比丘 若覺樂、覺苦、覺不苦不樂者,彼此覺觀無 常、觀興衰、觀斷、觀無欲、觀滅、觀捨。 |
Mahāmoggallāna, if a monk experiences pleasant feelings, painful feelings, or neutral feelings, he contemplates these feelings as impermanent, he contemplates their rise and fall, their eradication, their fading away, their cessation, and their abandonment. |
彼此 覺觀無常、觀興衰、觀斷、觀無欲、觀滅、觀 捨已,不受此世; |
Having contemplated feelings as impermanent, having contemplated their rise and fall, their eradication, their fading away, their cessation, and their abandonment, he does not cling to this world; |
因不受世已,便不疲勞;因 不疲勞已,便般涅槃,生已盡,梵行已立,所 作已辦,不更受有,知如真。 |
because of not clinging to the world, he is not wearied; because of not being wearied, he attains final nirvana and he knows as it really is: “Birth has been ended, the holy life has been established, what had to be done has been done. There will not be another experiencing of existence.” |
大目揵連!如是 比丘得至究竟,究竟白淨、究竟梵行、究竟梵 行訖。」 |
Mahāmoggallāna, in this way a monk attains the ultimate, the ultimate purity, the ultimate holy life, the ultimate completion of the holy life. |
佛說如是。尊者大目揵連聞佛所說, 歡喜奉行。 |
Thus spoke the Buddha. Having heard what the Buddha said, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was delighted and received it respectfully. |
