Whatever beings have come together here, |
bhummāni VAR vā yāni va antalikkhe. |
whether of the earth or in the firmament, |
♦ sabbeva bhūtā sumanā bhavantu, |
may the minds of all those beings be happy, |
athopi sakkacca suṇantu bhāsitaṃ. |
and may they listen carefully to what is said. |
♦ 2. tasmā hi bhūtā nisāmetha sabbe, |
Therefore, all of you beings, be attentive, |
mettaṃ karotha mānusiyā pajāya. |
be friendly towards this generation of men, |
♦ divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṃ, |
they who bring offerings by day and by night, |
tasmā hi ne rakkhatha appamattā. |
as they are heedful please protect them. |
♦ 3. yaṃ kiñci vittaṃ idha vā huraṃ vā, |
Whatever riches there are—here or hereafter |
saggesu vā yaṃ ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ. |
or in the heavens—that excellent treasure |
♦ na no samaṃ atthi tathāgatena, |
is not equal unto the Realised One— |
idampi buddhe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ. |
this excellent treasure is in the Buddha: |
♦ etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 4. khayaṃ virāgaṃ amataṃ paṇītaṃ, |
Craving’s end, dispassion, deathlessness, excellence— |
yadajjhagā sakyamunī samāhito. |
that which the concentrated Sakyan sage attained— |
♦ na tena dhammena samatthi kiñci, |
there is nothing that is equal to the Dhamma— |
idampi dhamme ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ. |
this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma: |
♦ etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 5. yaṃ buddha-seṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṃ, |
That which the great Buddha praised as being pure— |
samādhim-ānantarik-aññam-āhu. |
the concentration said to have immediate result— |
♦ samādhinā tena samo na vijjati, |
no equal to that concentration is found— |
idampi dhamme ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ. |
this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma: |
♦ etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 6. ye puggalā aṭṭha sataṃ pasatthā, |
Those eight individuals praised by the good— |
cattāri etāni yugāni honti. |
there are these four pairs of persons— |
♦ te dakkhiṇeyyā sugatassa sāvakā, |
those disciples of the Fortunate One are worthy of gifts, |
etesu dinnāni maha-p-phalāni. |
those things that have been given to them have great fruit— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 7. ye suppayuttā manasā daḷhena, |
Those who have firm minds that are devoted to |
nikkāmino gotama-sāsanamhi. |
Gotama’s teaching, being free from sense desire— |
♦ te pattipattā amataṃ vigayha, |
having attained and entered the deathless— |
laddhā mudhā nibbutiṃ VAR bhuñjamānā. |
are enjoying the stillness, obtained for free— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 8. yathindakhīlo pathavissito VAR siyā, |
Just as a locking post stuck fast in the earth |
catubbhi vātehi asampakampiyo. |
does not waver on account of the four winds, |
♦ tathūpamaṃ sappurisaṃ vadāmi, |
just like this, I say, is the person who is true, |
yo ariyasaccāni avecca passati. |
the one who sees the noble truths completely— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 9. ye ariya-saccāni vibhāvayanti, |
Those who clearly distinguish the noble truths, |
gambhīra-paññena sudesitāni. |
which have been well preached by the one with great wisdom, |
♦ kiñcāpi te honti bhusaṃ pamattā, |
no matter how great they become in heedlessness |
na te bhavaṃ aṭṭhamam-ādiyanti. |
still they do not take up an eighth existence— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 10. sahāvassa dassana-sampadāya VAR, |
Together with his attainment of seeing Emancipation |
tayassu dhammā jahitā bhavanti. |
there are three things that are given up: |
♦ sakkāya-diṭṭhī vicikicchitañca, |
embodiment view, uncertainty, and |
sīlabbataṃ vāpi yadatthi kiñci. |
whatever grasping at virtue and practices there is. |
♦ 11. catūhapāyehi ca vippamutto, |
He is free from rebirth in the four lower worlds, |
chaccābhiṭhānāni VAR abhabba kātuṃ VAR . |
and he is incapable of the six great crimes— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 12. kiñcāpi so kamma VAR karoti pāpakaṃ, |
Whatever bad actions he performs |
kāyena vācā uda cetasā vā. |
by way of body, speech, or mind, |
♦ abhabba VAR so tassa paṭicchadāya VAR, |
he is incapable of covering it up: |
abhabbatā diṭṭhapadassa vuttā. |
this incapacity is said of one who has seen the state of peace— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 13. vanappagumbe yatha VAR phussitagge, |
Just like a tall woodland tree crowned with flowers |
gimhānamāse paṭhamasmiṃ VAR gimhe. |
in the summer months, in the early summer, |
♦ tathūpamaṃ dhammavaraṃ adesayi VAR, |
just like this he preached the Dhamma which is best, |
nibbānagāmiṃ paramaṃ hitāya. |
which goes to Emancipation, the highest benefit— |
♦ idampi buddhe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Buddha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 14. varo varaññū varado varāharo, |
The best one, knowing the best, gave the best, brought the best, |
anuttaro dhamma-varaṃ adesayi. |
he preached the best Dhamma, which is unsurpassed— |
♦ idampi buddhe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Buddha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |
♦ 15. khīṇaṃ purāṇaṃ nava natthi sambhavaṃ, |
The old is destroyed, and nothing new is produced, |
viratta-citt'-āyatike bhavasmiṃ. |
their minds are unexcited by future rebirth, |
♦ te khīṇa-bījā avirūḷhi-chandā, |
they have destroyed the seeds, and have no desire for growth, |
nibbanti dhīrā yathāyaṃ VAR padīpo. |
the wise are still, just as this lamp is still— |
♦ idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, |
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha: |
etena saccena suvatthi hotu. |
by virtue of this truth may there be safety! |

They stand beyond the walls, |
and at the junctions and crossroads, | |
♦ tirokuṭṭesu tiṭṭhanti, sandhisiṅghāṭakesu ca. |
they stand at the door-posts, |
having come to their former homes. | |
♦ dvārabāhāsu tiṭṭhanti, āgantvāna sakaṃ gharaṃ. |

But when abundant food and drink, | |
♦ 2. |
both staple and non-staple, is prepared, |
no one remembers these | |
♦ pahūte annapānamhi, khajjabhojje upaṭṭhite. |
beings, because of their past unwholesome deeds, |
♦ na tesaṃ koci sarati, sattānaṃ kammapaccayā. |
Thus those who are compassionate |
give to their departed relatives, | |
♦ 3. |
at the right time, pure, excellent, |
suitable drink and food. | |
♦ evaṃ dadanti ñātīnaṃ, ye honti anukampakā. |

Thinking: “May this go to our relatives, | |
♦ suciṃ paṇītaṃ kālena, kappiyaṃ pānabhojanaṃ. |
may our relatives be happy!” |
Those who have gathered, | |
♦ idaṃ vo ñātīnaṃ hotu, sukhitā hontu ñātayo. |
the departed relatives who have assembled |
around the food and drink, | |
♦ 4. |
respectfully offer their thanks: |
♦ te ca tattha samāgantvā, ñātipetā samāgatā. |
saying: “ May our relatives live long! |
Those to whom we owe this gain, | |
♦ pahūte annapānamhi, sakkaccaṃ anumodare. |
for we have been honoured, |
those who give are not without reward!” | |

For in that place there is no ploughing, | |
♦ ciraṃ jīvantu no ñātī, yesaṃ hetu labhāmase. |
and cattle-rearing is not found there, |
similarly there is no trading, | |
♦ amhākañca katā pūjā, dāyakā ca anipphalā. |
or buying and selling of gold. |
♦ 6. |
The departed in that place who have died, have to subsist on gifts. |
Just as water that rains on the highlands, flows down to the lowlands, | |
♦ na hi tattha kasi VAR atthi, gorakkhettha na vijjati. |
so too what has been given here |
is of benefit to the departed. | |
♦ vaṇijjā tādisī natthi, hiraññena kayokayaṃ VAR . |

Just as rivers that are full | |
♦ ito dinnena yāpenti, petā kālaṅkatā VAR tahiṃ. |
flow and fill up the ocean, |
so too what has been given here | |
♦ 7. |
is of benefit to the departed. |
♦ unname udakaṃ vuṭṭhaṃ, yathā ninnaṃ pavattati. |
Thinking: “He gave to me, he worked for me, |
he was my relative, my friend, my companion,” | |
♦ evameva ito dinnaṃ, petānaṃ upakappati. |
he should give gifts for the departed, |
remembering what they have done before. | |
♦ 8. |

For no tears, or grief, | |
♦ yathā vārivahā pūrā, paripūrenti sāgaraṃ. |
or any other lamentations, |
are of any use to the departed, | |
♦ evameva ito dinnaṃ, petānaṃ upakappati. |
as long as their relatives continue grieving in this way. |
♦ 9. |
But that gift that has been given, |
and well placed in the Sangha, | |
♦ adāsi me akāsi me, ñātimittā VAR sakhā ca me. |
is of benefit to them for a long time, |
immediately it is of benefit. | |
♦ petānaṃ dakkhiṇaṃ dajjā, pubbe katamanussaraṃ. |

This then is the definition of a relative’s duties— | |
♦ 10. |
and by this great honour has been done to the departed, |
strength has also been given to the monks, | |
♦ na hi ruṇṇaṃ vā soko vā, yā caññā paridevanā. |
and no little merit has been produced by you! |
♦ na taṃ petānamatthāya, evaṃ tiṭṭhanti ñātayo. |

The Discourse on the Amount of Savings |
♦ 1. |
A man stores his savings |
in a deep pit close to water thinking: | |
♦ nidhiṃ nidheti puriso, gambhīre odakantike. |
“When a duty or need has arisen |
it will be there to help me, | |
♦ atthe kicce samuppanne, atthāya me bhavissati. |

to free me from a king if slandered, or from molestation | |
♦ 2. |
from a thief, or from a debt, or famine, or accident.” |
For this kind of help, savings are stored up in the world. | |
♦ rājato vā duruttassa, corato pīḷitassa vā. |
|
Although it is well stored | |
♦ iṇassa vā pamokkhāya, dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā. |
in a deep pit, close to water, |
still, it cannot help him in all things on every occasion, | |
♦ etadatthāya lokasmiṃ, nidhi nāma nidhīyati. |
|
for perhaps those savings are removed from that place, | |
♦ 3. |
or he forgets the signs telling where they lie, |
or nāgas take them away, | |
♦ tāvassunihito VAR santo, gambhīre odakantike. |
or yakkhas carry them off, |
♦ na sabbo sabbadā eva, tassa taṃ upakappati. |
or the heirs he dislikes |
extract them unseen, | |
♦ 4. |
and when his merit comes to an end |
all of it will be destroyed. | |
♦ nidhi vā ṭhānā cavati, saññā vāssa vimuyhati. |

But that woman or man who through giving, virtue, | |
♦ nāgā vā apanāmenti, yakkhā vāpi haranti naṃ. |
restraint, and self-control has well stored up his savings, |
placing them in a shrine, or in the Sangha, | |
♦ 5. |
or in an individual, or a guest, |
♦ appiyā vāpi dāyādā, uddharanti apassato. |
or in his mother or father, |
also in an elder brother, | |
♦ yadā puññakkhayo hoti, sabbametaṃ vinassati. |
those savings are well stored up, |
they follow one, they do not decay. | |
♦ 6. |

Riches he gives up when he has to leave this life | |
♦ yassa dānena sīlena, saṃyamena damena ca. |
but this goes along with him. |
It is not shared with others, | |
♦ nidhī sunihito hoti, itthiyā purisassa vā. |
no thief carries those savings away, |
♦ 7. |
the wise man should make merit, |
for those savings follow one along. | |
♦ cetiyamhi ca saṅghe vā, puggale atithīsu vā. |
These savings satisfy every desire of gods and men, |
whatever they wish for, | |
♦ mātari pitari cāpi VAR, atho jeṭṭhamhi bhātari. |
through this merit they receive all. |
♦ 8. |
A good appearance, a good voice, |
a good shape, a good form, | |
♦ eso nidhi sunihito, ajeyyo anugāmiko. |
sovereignty, and a retinue, |
through this merit they receive all. | |
♦ pahāya gamanīyesu, etaṃ ādāya gacchati. |

A local kingship, an empire, | |
♦ 9. |
and whatever happiness a Wheel-Rolling King has, |
also godly kingship in the heavens, | |
♦ asādhāraṇamaññesaṃ, acorāharaṇo nidhi. |
through this merit they receive all. |
♦ kayirātha dhīro puññāni, yo nidhi anugāmiko. |
Human good fortune, |
delight in the world of the gods, | |
♦ 10. |
even the attainment of Emancipation, |
through this merit they receive all. | |
♦ esa devamanussānaṃ, sabbakāmadado nidhi. |
|
With the attainment of good friends, | |
♦ yaṃ yadevābhipatthenti, sabbametena labbhati. |
devotion to systematic thought, |
there is the power of understanding and freedom, | |
♦ 11. |
through this merit they receive all. |
♦ suvaṇṇatā susaratā, susaṇṭhānā surūpatā VAR . |
The discriminations, and the liberations, |
and whatever perfections the disciples have, | |
♦ ādhipaccaparivāro, sabbametena labbhati. |
Independent Awakening, the Buddhas’ ground, |
through this merit they receive all. | |
♦ 12. |

So this is of great benefit, | |
♦ padesarajjaṃ issariyaṃ, cakkavattisukhaṃ piyaṃ. |
that is to say, the attainment of merit, |
therefore the wise and intelligent always praise the making of merit. | |
♦ devarajjampi dibbesu, sabbametena labbhati. |

The Discourse on Friendliness Meditation |
“Karaṇīyamatthakusalena, |
This is what should be done by those who are skilled in goodness, |
Yanta santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca; |
and have known the state of peace. |
Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, |
Let them be able and upright, very upright, |
Sūvaco cassa mudu anatimānī. |
easy to speak to, gentle and humble; |
Santussako ca subharo ca, |
content and unburdensome, |
Appakicco ca sallahukavutti; |
unbusied, living lightly, |
Santindriyo ca nipako ca, |
alert, with senses calmed, |
Appagabbho kulesvananugiddho. |
courteous, not fawning on families. |
Na ca khuddamācare kiñci, |
Let them not do the slightest thing |
Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṁ; |
that others might blame with reason. |
Sukhino va khemino hontu, |
May they be happy and safe! |
Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā. |
May all beings be happy! |
Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, |
Whatever living creatures there are |
Tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā; |
with not a one left out— |
Dīghā vā ye va mahantā, |
frail or firm, long or large, |
Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā. |
medium, small, tiny or round, |
Diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā, |
visible or invisible, |
Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre; |
living far or near, |
Bhūtā va sambhavesī va, |
those born or to be born: |
Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā. |
May all beings be happy! |
Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha, |
Let none turn from another, |
Nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci; |
nor look down on anyone anywhere. |
Byārosanā paṭigha-sañña, |
Though provoked or aggrieved, |
Nāññamaññassa dukkham-iccheyya. |
let them not wish pain on each other. |
Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttam |
Even as a mother would protect her own child, |
Āyusā eka-puttam-anu-rakkhe; |
her only child, at the risk of her own life, |
Evam-pi sabba-bhūtesu, |
so too towards all creatures [, for their safety and happiness, ] |
Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ. |
[You] should develop [and protect your] unlimited heart. |
Mettañca sabbalokasmi, |
With Friendly-kindness for the whole world, |
Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ; |
develop an unlimited heart. |
Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca, |
Above, below, all round, |
Asambādhaṁ a-veram-a-sapattaṁ. |
unconstricted, without vengeful-animosity or hostility. |
Tiṭṭhaṁ caraṁ nisinno va, |
When standing, walking, sitting, |
Sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho; |
or lying down while yet unweary, |
Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya, |
One is strongly determined to maintain this remembrance [of Dharma on metta], |
Brahmametaṁ vihāram-idhamāhu. |
for this, they say, is a holy abiding in this life. |
Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma, |
Avoiding harmful views, |
Sīlavā dassanena sampanno; |
virtuous, accomplished in insight, |
Kāmesu vinaya gedhaṁ, |
with greed for sensuality removed, |
Na hi jātuggabbhaseyya punaretī”ti. |
they never come back to a womb again. |
♦ mettasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ. |
