4. The fourth training rule |
Tena samayena buddho bhagavā vesāliyaṃ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṃ. Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā sandiṭṭhā sambhattā bhikkhū vaggumudāya nadiyā tīre vassaṃ upagacchiṃsu. Tena kho pana samayena vajjī dubbhikkhā hoti dvīhitikā setaṭṭhikā salākāvuttā, na sukarā uñchena paggahena yāpetuṃ. |
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī in the hall with the peaked roof in the Great Wood. At that time a number of monks who were friends had entered the rains residence on the banks of the river Vaggumudā. Just then Vajjī was short of food and afflicted with hunger, with crops blighted and turned to straw, and it was not easy to get by on almsfood. |
Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ etadahosi—“etarahi kho vajjī dubbhikkhā dvīhitikā setaṭṭhikā salākāvuttā, na sukarā uñchena paggahena yāpetuṃ. Kena nu kho mayaṃ upāyena samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vaseyyāma, na ca piṇḍakena kilameyyāmā”ti? |
The monks considered the difficult circumstances, and they thought, “How can we remain united and in harmony, have a comfortable rains, and get almsfood without problems?” |
Ekacce evamāhaṃsu—“handa mayaṃ, āvuso, gihīnaṃ kammantaṃ adhiṭṭhema, evaṃ te amhākaṃ dātuṃ maññissanti. Evaṃ mayaṃ samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasissāma, na ca piṇḍakena kilamissāmā”ti. |
Some said, “We could work for the lay people, and they’ll give something in return. In this way we’ll be united and in harmony, and we’ll spend the rains in comfort and have no problems getting almsfood.” |
Ekacce evamāhaṃsu—“alaṃ, āvuso, kiṃ gihīnaṃ kammantaṃ adhiṭṭhitena. Handa mayaṃ, āvuso, gihīnaṃ dūteyyaṃ harāma, evaṃ te amhākaṃ dātuṃ maññissanti. Evaṃ mayaṃ samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasissāma, na ca piṇḍakena kilamissāmā”ti. |
Some said, “There’s no need to work for the lay people. Let’s instead take messages for them, and they’ll give something in return. In this way we’ll be united and in harmony, and we’ll spend the rains in comfort and have no problems getting almsfood.” |
Ekacce evamāhaṃsu—“alaṃ, āvuso, kiṃ gihīnaṃ kammantaṃ adhiṭṭhitena. Kiṃ gihīnaṃ dūteyyaṃ haṭena. Handa mayaṃ, āvuso, gihīnaṃ aññamaññassa uttarimanussadhammassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsissāma—‘asuko bhikkhu paṭhamassa jhānassa lābhī, asuko bhikkhu dutiyassa jhānassa lābhī, asuko bhikkhu tatiyassa jhānassa lābhī, asuko bhikkhu catutthassa jhānassa lābhī, asuko bhikkhu sotāpanno, asuko bhikkhu sakadāgāmī, asuko bhikkhu anāgāmī, asuko bhikkhu arahā, asuko bhikkhu tevijjo, asuko bhikkhu chaḷabhiñño’ti. Evaṃ te amhākaṃ dātuṃ maññissanti. Evaṃ mayaṃ samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasissāma, na ca piṇḍakena kilamissāmā”ti. “Esoyeva kho, āvuso, seyyo yo amhākaṃ gihīnaṃ aññamaññassa uttarimanussadhammassa vaṇṇo bhāsito”ti. |
Some said, “There’s no need to work for the lay people, nor to take messages for them. Let’s instead praise one another’s superhuman qualities to the lay people: ‘Such a monk has the first absorption, such a monk the second absorption, such a monk the third, such a monk the fourth; such a monk is a stream-enterer, such a monk a once-returner, such a non-returner, such a perfected one; such a monk has the three true insights, and such the six direct knowledges.’ Then they’ll give to us. In this way we’ll be united and in harmony, and we’ll spend the rains in comfort and have no problems getting almsfood. Indeed, this is the better way, that we praise one another’s superhuman qualities to the lay people.” |
Atha kho te bhikkhū gihīnaṃ aññamaññassa uttarimanussadhammassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsiṃsu—“asuko bhikkhu paṭhamassa jhānassa lābhī … pe … asuko bhikkhu chaḷabhiñño”ti. Atha kho te manussā—“lābhā vata no, suladdhaṃ vata no, yesaṃ no evarūpā bhikkhū vassaṃ upagatā; na vata no ito pubbe evarūpā bhikkhū vassaṃ upagatā yathayime bhikkhū sīlavanto kalyāṇadhammā”ti, te na tādisāni bhojanāni attanā paribhuñjanti mātāpitūnaṃ denti puttadārassa denti dāsakammakaraporisassa denti mittāmaccānaṃ denti ñātisālohitānaṃ denti, yādisāni bhikkhūnaṃ denti. Te na tādisāni khādanīyāni sāyanīyāni pānāni attanā khādanti sāyanti pivanti mātāpitūnaṃ denti puttadārassa denti dāsakammakaraporisassa denti mittāmaccānaṃ denti ñātisālohitānaṃ denti, yādisāni bhikkhūnaṃ denti. Atha kho te bhikkhū vaṇṇavā ahesuṃ pīṇindriyā pasannamukhavaṇṇā vippasannachavivaṇṇā. |
Then those monks praised one another’s superhuman qualities to the lay people: “Such a monk has the first absorption … such a monk has the six direct knowledges.” And those people thought, “We’re fortunate that such monks have come to us for the rains residence. Such monks as these, who are virtuous and of good character, have never before entered the rains residence with us.” And they gave such food and drink to those monks that they did not even eat and drink themselves, or give to their parents, to their wives and children, to their slaves, servants, and workers, to their friends and companions, or to their relatives. In this way those monks were handsome, with rounded features, bright faces, and clear skin. |
Āciṇṇaṃ kho panetaṃ vassaṃvuṭṭhānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ bhagavantaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Atha kho te bhikkhū vassaṃvuṭṭhā temāsaccayena senāsanaṃ saṃsāmetvā pattacīvaraṃ ādāya yena vesālī tena pakkamiṃsu. Anupubbena yena vesālī mahāvanaṃ kūṭāgārasālā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. |
Now it was the custom for monks who had finished keeping the rains residence to go to see the Master. So when the rainy-season residence was completed and the three months had elapsed, those monks put their dwellings in order, took their bowls and robes, and departed for Vesālī. When they eventually arrived at Vesālī, they went to the hall with the peaked roof in the Great Wood. There they approached the Master, bowed down to him, and sat down to one side. |
Tena kho pana samayena disāsu vassaṃvuṭṭhā bhikkhū kisā honti lūkhā dubbaṇṇā uppaṇḍuppaṇḍukajātā dhamanisanthatagattā; vaggumudātīriyā pana bhikkhū vaṇṇavā honti pīṇindriyā pasannamukhavaṇṇā vippasannachavivaṇṇā. Āciṇṇaṃ kho panetaṃ buddhānaṃ bhagavantānaṃ āgantukehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ paṭisammodituṃ. Atha kho bhagavā vaggumudātīriye bhikkhū etadavoca—“kacci, bhikkhave, khamanīyaṃ kacci yāpanīyaṃ kacci samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasittha, na ca piṇḍakena kilamitthā”ti? |
At that time the monks who had completed the rainy-season residence in that region were thin, haggard, and pale, their veins protruding all over their limbs. But the monks from the banks of the Vaggumudā were handsome, with rounded features, bright faces, and clear skin. It is the custom for Buddhas to greet newly arrived monks, and so the Master said to them, “I hope you’re keeping well, monks, I hope you’re comfortable; I hope you spent the rains at ease, in concord and harmony, without dispute, and that you had no trouble getting almsfood?” |
“Khamanīyaṃ, bhagavā, yāpanīyaṃ, bhagavā. Samaggā ca mayaṃ, bhante, sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasimhā, na ca piṇḍakena kilamimhā”ti. Jānantāpi tathāgatā pucchanti, jānantāpi na pucchanti … pe … dvīhākārehi buddhā bhagavanto bhikkhū paṭipucchanti—“dhammaṃ vā desessāma, sāvakānaṃ vā sikkhāpadaṃ paññapessāmā”ti. |
“We’re keeping well, Master, we’re comfortable; we spent the rains at ease, in concord and harmony, without dispute, and we had no trouble getting almsfood.” Buddhas sometimes ask knowing, and knowing sometimes do not ask; they ask knowing the right time to ask, and they ask knowing the right time not to ask. Buddhas ask when it is beneficial, not when it is unbeneficial; in regard to what is unbeneficial, the Buddhas have destroyed the bridge. Buddhas question the monks for two reasons: to give a teaching or to lay down a training rule. |
Atha kho bhagavā vaggumudātīriye bhikkhū etadavoca—“yathā kathaṃ pana tumhe, bhikkhave, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā phāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasittha na ca piṇḍakena kilamitthā”ti? |
And the Master said to those monks, “In what way, monks, did you spend the rains at ease, without having any trouble getting almsfood?” |
Atha kho te bhikkhū bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ. |
Then those monks told the Master. |
“Kacci pana vo, bhikkhave, bhūtan”ti? |
“But had you really achieved those superhuman qualities?” |
“Abhūtaṃ, bhagavā”ti. |
“No, Master.” |
Vigarahi buddho bhagavā—“ananucchavikaṃ, moghapurisā, ananulomikaṃ appatirūpaṃ assāmaṇakaṃ akappiyaṃ akaraṇīyaṃ. Kathañhi nāma tumhe, moghapurisā, udarassa kāraṇā gihīnaṃ aññamaññassa uttarimanussadhammassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsissatha. Varaṃ tumhehi, moghapurisā, tiṇhena govikantanena kucchi parikanto, na tveva udarassa kāraṇā gihīnaṃ aññamaññassa uttarimanussadhammassa vaṇṇo bhāsito. Taṃ kissa hetu? Tatonidānañhi, moghapurisā, maraṇaṃ vā nigaccheyya maraṇamattaṃ vā dukkhaṃ, na tveva tappaccayā kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjeyya. Itonidānañca kho, moghapurisā, kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjeyya. Netaṃ, moghapurisā, appasannānaṃ vā pasādāya … pe … vigarahitvā dhammiṃ kathaṃ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi— |
The Buddha rebuked them, “It’s unsuitable, foolish men, it’s not proper, it’s not fitting for an ascetic, it’s not allowable, it’s not to be done. How can you for the sake of your stomachs praise one another’s superhuman qualities to lay people? It would be better for your bellies to be cut open with a sharp butcher’s knife than for you to praise one another’s superhuman qualities to lay people. Why is that? Because for that reason you might die or experience death-like suffering, but you wouldn’t because of that be reborn in a bad destination. But for *this* reason you might. This will not give rise to confidence in those without it …” … After criticizing them and giving a teaching, he addressed the monks: |
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, mahācorā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. Katame pañca? Idha, bhikkhave, ekaccassa mahācorassa evaṃ hoti—‘kudāssu nāmāhaṃ satena vā sahassena vā parivuto gāmanigamarājadhānīsu āhiṇḍissāmi hananto ghātento chindanto chedāpento pacanto pācento’ti. So aparena samayena satena vā sahassena vā parivuto gāmanigamarājadhānīsu āhiṇḍati hananto ghātento chindanto chedāpento pacanto pācento. Evameva kho, bhikkhave, idhekaccassa pāpabhikkhuno evaṃ hoti—‘kudāssu nāmāhaṃ satena vā sahassena vā parivuto gāmanigamarājadhānīsu cārikaṃ carissāmi sakkato garukato mānito pūjito apacito gahaṭṭhānañceva pabbajitānañca, lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānan’ti. So aparena samayena satena vā sahassena vā parivuto gāmanigamarājadhānīsu cārikaṃ carati sakkato garukato mānito pūjito apacito gahaṭṭhānañceva pabbajitānañca, lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṃ. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo mahācoro santo saṃvijjamāno lokasmiṃ. #1 |
“Monks, there are these five great gangsters to be found in the world. What five? A great gangster thinks like this: ‘Oh when will I, with a following of a hundred or a thousand men, wander among villages, towns, and royal capitals, killing and making others kill, destroying and making others destroy, tormenting and making others torment?’ Then after some time, he does just that. Just so, monks, a bad monk thinks like this: ‘Oh when will I, with a following of a hundred or a thousand people, go wandering among villages, towns, and royal capitals; be honored, respected, and revered by both lay people and those gone forth; and obtain robe-cloth, almsfood, dwellings, and medicines?’ Then after some time, he does just that. This is the first great gangster to be found in the world. |
Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, idhekacco pāpabhikkhu tathāgatappaveditaṃ dhammavinayaṃ pariyāpuṇitvā attano dahati. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, dutiyo mahācoro santo saṃvijjamāno lokasmiṃ. #2 |
Again, a bad monk learns the Teaching and training proclaimed by the Buddha and takes it as his own. This is the second great gangster to be found in the world. |
Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, idhekacco pāpabhikkhu suddhaṃ brahmacāriṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ carantaṃ amūlakena abrahmacariyena anuddhaṃseti. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, tatiyo mahācoro santo saṃvijjamāno lokasmiṃ. #3 |
Again, a bad monk groundlessly accuses someone who lives the spiritual life in purity of not abstaining from sexuality. This is the third great gangster to be found in the world. |
Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, idhekacco pāpabhikkhu yāni tāni saṃghassa garubhaṇḍāni garuparikkhārāni, seyyathidaṃ—ārāmo ārāmavatthu vihāro vihāravatthu mañco pīṭhaṃ bhisi bibbohanaṃ lohakumbhī lohabhāṇakaṃ lohavārako lohakaṭāhaṃ vāsi parasu kuṭhārī kudālo nikhādanaṃ valli veḷu muñjaṃ pabbajaṃ tiṇaṃ mattikā dārubhaṇḍaṃ mattikābhaṇḍaṃ, tehi gihiṃ saṅgaṇhāti upalāpeti. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, catuttho mahācoro santo saṃvijjamāno lokasmiṃ. #4 |
Again, a bad monk takes valuable goods and equipment belonging to the Order—a monastery, the land of a monastery, a dwelling, the land of a dwelling, a bed, a bench, a mattress, a pillow, a metal pot, a metal jar, a metal bucket, a metal bowl, a machete, a hatchet, an axe, a spade, a chisel, a creeper, bamboo, reed, grass, clay, wooden articles, earthenware articles—and uses them to win over and create a following among lay people. This is the fourth great gangster to be found in the world. |
Sadevake, bhikkhave, loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya ayaṃ aggo mahācoro yo asantaṃ abhūtaṃ uttarimanussadhammaṃ ullapati. Taṃ kissa hetu? Theyyāya vo, bhikkhave, raṭṭhapiṇḍo bhutto”ti. #5 |
But in this world with its gods, its lords of death, and its supreme beings, in this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans, this is the greatest gangster: he who untruthfully and groundlessly boasts about a superhuman quality. Why is that? Monks, you’ve eaten the country’s almsfood by theft.” |
Aññathā santamattānaṃ, |
Whoever should declare himself |
aññathā yo pavedaye; |
to be other than he truly is, |
Nikacca kitavasseva, |
Has eaten this by theft, |
bhuttaṃ theyyena tassa taṃ. |
like a cheater who has deceived. |
Kāsāvakaṇṭhā bahavo, |
Many ocher-necks of bad qualities, |
pāpadhammā asaññatā; |
uncontrolled and wicked— |
Pāpā pāpehi kammehi, |
By their wicked deeds, |
nirayaṃ te upapajjare. |
they are reborn in hell. |
Seyyo ayoguḷo bhutto, |
It is better to eat an iron ball, |
tatto aggisikhūpamo; |
heated, like a burning flame, |
Yañce bhuñjeyya dussīlo, |
Than for the immoral and uncontrolled |
raṭṭhapiṇḍaṃ asaññatoti. |
to eat the country’s alms. |
Atha kho bhagavā vaggumudātīriye bhikkhū anekapariyāyena vigarahitvā dubbharatāya dupposatāya … pe … evañca pana, bhikkhave, imaṃ sikkhāpadaṃ uddiseyyātha— |
After criticizing the monks from the banks of the Vaggumudā in various ways for being difficult to maintain, difficult to support … “… And, monks, this training rule should be recited thus: |
“Yo pana bhikkhu anabhijānaṃ uttarimanussadhammaṃ attupanāyikaṃ alamariyañāṇadassanaṃ samudācareyya—‘iti jānāmi iti passāmī’ti, tato aparena samayena samanuggāhīyamāno vā asamanuggāhīyamāno vā āpanno visuddhāpekkho evaṃ vadeyya—‘ajānamevaṃ, āvuso, avacaṃ jānāmi, apassaṃ passāmi. Tucchaṃ musā vilapin’ti, ayampi pārājiko hoti asaṃvāso”ti. |
‘If a monk falsely claims for himself a superhuman quality, knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, saying, “This I know, this I see,” but after some time—whether questioned or not, but having committed the offense and desiring purification—should say: “Not knowing I said that I know, not seeing that I see; what I said was empty and false,” he too is expelled and excluded from the community.’” |
Evañcidaṃ bhagavatā bhikkhūnaṃ sikkhāpadaṃ paññattaṃ hoti. |
In this way the Master laid down this training rule for the monks. |
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhū adiṭṭhe diṭṭhasaññino apatte pattasaññino anadhigate adhigatasaññino asacchikate sacchikatasaññino adhimānena aññaṃ byākariṃsu. Tesaṃ aparena samayena rāgāyapi cittaṃ namati dosāyapi cittaṃ namati mohāyapi cittaṃ namati. Tesaṃ kukkuccaṃ ahosi—“bhagavatā sikkhāpadaṃ paññattaṃ. Mayañcamha adiṭṭhe diṭṭhasaññino apatte pattasaññino anadhigate adhigatasaññino asacchikate sacchikatasaññino, adhimānena aññaṃ byākarimhā. Kacci nu kho mayaṃ pārājikaṃ āpattiṃ āpannā”ti? Te āyasmato ānandassa etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ. Āyasmā ānando bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesi. “Honti ye te, ānanda, bhikkhū adiṭṭhe diṭṭhasaññino apatte pattasaññino anadhigate adhigatasaññino asacchikate sacchikatasaññino adhimānena aññaṃ byākaronti. Tañca kho etaṃ abbohārikan”ti. |
At one time a number of monks, thinking they had seen what they had not, attained what they had not, achieved what they had not, realized what they had not, declared final knowledge because of overestimation. After some time, their minds inclined to sensual desire, ill-will, and confusion. They became remorseful, thinking, “The Master has laid down a training rule; yet we declared final knowledge because of overestimation. Could it be that we’ve committed an offense entailing expulsion?” They told Venerable Ānanda, who told the Master. He said, “Ānanda, these monks declared final knowledge because of overestimation, thinking they had seen what they had not, attained what they had not, achieved what they had not, realized what they had not, but this is negligible. |
“Evañca pana, bhikkhave, imaṃ sikkhāpadaṃ uddiseyyātha— |
And so, monks, this training rule should be recited thus: |
“Yo pana bhikkhu anabhijānaṃ uttarimanussadhammaṃ attupanāyikaṃ alamariyañāṇadassanaṃ samudācareyya—‘iti jānāmi iti passāmī’ti, tato aparena samayena samanuggāhīyamāno vā asamanuggāhīyamāno vā āpanno visuddhāpekkho evaṃ vadeyya—‘ajānamevaṃ, āvuso, avacaṃ jānāmi, apassaṃ passāmi. Tucchaṃ musā vilapin’ti, aññatra adhimānā, ayampi pārājiko hoti asaṃvāso”ti. |
‘If a monk falsely claims for himself a superhuman quality, knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, saying, “This I know, this I see,” but after some time—whether he is questioned or not, but having committed the offense and desiring purification—should say: “Not knowing I said that I know, not seeing that I see; what I said was empty and false,” unless it is due to overestimation, he too is expelled and excluded from the community.’” |
Yo panāti yo yādiso … pe … bhikkhūti … pe … ayaṃ imasmiṃ atthe adhippeto bhikkhūti. |
A: whoever … Monk: … The monk who has been given the full ordination by a complete Order through a procedure consisting of one motion and three announcements that is unchallengeable and fit to stand—this sort of monk is meant in this case. |
Anabhijānanti asantaṃ abhūtaṃ asaṃvijjamānaṃ ajānanto apassanto attani kusalaṃ dhammaṃ—atthi me kusalo dhammoti. |
Falsely: although a certain wholesome quality is non-existent in himself, not real, not to be found, and he does not see it or know it, he says, “I have this wholesome quality.” |
Uttarimanussadhammo nāma jhānaṃ vimokkho samādhi samāpatti ñāṇadassanaṃ maggabhāvanā phalasacchikiriyā kilesappahānaṃ vinīvaraṇatā cittassa suññāgāre abhirati. |
A superhuman quality: absorption, release, samādhi, attainment, knowledge and vision, development of the path, realization of the fruits, abandoning the defilements, a mind without hindrances, delighting in empty dwellings. |
Attupanāyikanti te vā kusale dhamme attani upaneti attānaṃ vā tesu kusalesu dhammesu upaneti. |
For himself: either he presents those good qualities as in himself, or he presents himself as among those good qualities. |
Ñāṇanti tisso vijjā. Dassananti yaṃ ñāṇaṃ taṃ dassanaṃ, yaṃ dassanaṃ taṃ ñāṇaṃ. |
Knowledge: the three true insights. Vision: knowledge and vision are equivalent. |
Samudācareyyāti āroceyya itthiyā vā purisassa vā gahaṭṭhassa vā pabbajitassa vā. |
Claims: announces to a woman or a man, to a lay person or one gone forth. |
Iti jānāmi iti passāmīti jānāmahaṃ ete dhamme, passāmahaṃ ete dhamme atthi ca ete dhammā mayi, ahañca etesu dhammesu sandissāmīti. |
This I know, this I see: “I know these qualities/ I see these qualities/these qualities are found in me and I conform to them.” |
Tato aparena samayenāti yasmiṃ khaṇe samudāciṇṇaṃ hoti taṃ khaṇaṃ taṃ layaṃ taṃ muhuttaṃ vītivatte. |
After some time: the moment, the second, the instant after he has made the claim. |

Asaṃvāsoti saṃvāso nāma ekakammaṃ ekuddeso samasikkhatā—eso saṃvāso nāma. So tena saddhiṃ natthi. Tena vuccati—“asaṃvāso”ti. |

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ca lakkhaṇo āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno gijjhakūṭe pabbate viharanti. Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaraṃ ādāya yenāyasmā lakkhaṇo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ lakkhaṇaṃ etadavoca—“āyāmāvuso lakkhaṇa, rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pavisissāmā”ti. |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrel sanctuary, while Venerable Lakkhaṇa and Venerable Mahāmoggallāna were staying on Mount Vulture Peak. One morning Mahāmoggallāna robed up, took his bowl and robe, approached Lakkhaṇa, and said, “Lakkhaṇa, let’s enter Rājagaha for almsfood.” |
“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā lakkhaṇo āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa paccassosi. |
“Yes.” |
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno gijjhakūṭā pabbatā orohanto aññatarasmiṃ padese sitaṃ pātvākāsi. Atha kho āyasmā lakkhaṇo āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ etadavoca—“ko nu kho, āvuso moggallāna, hetu ko paccayo sitassa pātukammāyā”ti? |
As they were descending from Mount Vulture Peak, Mahāmoggallāna smiled at a certain place. Lakkhaṇa asked him, “Why are you smiling?” |
“Akālo kho, āvuso lakkhaṇa, etassa pañhassa. Bhagavato maṃ santike etaṃ pañhaṃ pucchā”ti. |
“This isn’t the right time to reply. Please ask me in the presence of the Master.” |
Atha kho āyasmā ca lakkhaṇo āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno rājagahe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā lakkhaṇo āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ etadavoca— |
Then, after their meal and after returning from almsround, Lakkhaṇa and Mahāmoggallāna approached the Master and sat down to one side. And Lakkhaṇa said to Mahāmoggallāna: |
“idhāyasmā mahāmoggallāno gijjhakūṭā pabbatā orohanto aññatarasmiṃ padese sitaṃ pātvākāsi. Ko nu kho, āvuso moggallāna, hetu ko paccayo sitassa pātukammāyā”ti? |
“Just now, as you were descending from Mount Vulture Peak, you smiled at a certain place. Why was that?” |
“Idhāhaṃ, āvuso, gijjhakūṭā pabbatā orohanto addasaṃ aṭṭhikasaṅkhalikaṃ vehāsaṃ gacchantiṃ. Tamenaṃ gijjhāpi kākāpi kulalāpi anupatitvā anupatitvā phāsuḷantarikāhi vituḍenti. Sā sudaṃ aṭṭassaraṃ karoti. Tassa mayhaṃ, āvuso, etadahosi—‘acchariyaṃ vata bho, abbhutaṃ vata bho, evarūpopi nāma satto bhavissati. Evarūpopi nāma yakkho bhavissati. Evarūpopi nāma attabhāvappaṭilābho bhavissatī’”ti. |
“As I was coming down from Mount Vulture Peak, I saw a skeleton flying through the air. Vultures, crows, and hawks were in close pursuit of it, striking it between the ribs, while it uttered cries of distress. And I thought how amazing and astonishing it is that such a being should exist, such a spirit, such a state of existence.” |
Bhikkhū ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“uttarimanussadhammaṃ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno ullapatī”ti. |
The monks complained and criticized him, “Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is claiming a superhuman ability.” |
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi— |
The Master then said to them: |
“cakkhubhūtā vata, bhikkhave, sāvakā viharanti. Ñāṇabhūtā vata, bhikkhave, sāvakā viharanti. Yatra hi nāma sāvako evarūpaṃ ñassati vā dakkhati vā sakkhiṃ vā karissati. Pubbeva me so, bhikkhave, satto diṭṭho ahosi. Api cāhaṃ na byākāsiṃ. Ahañcetaṃ byākareyyaṃ pare ca me na saddaheyyuṃ. Ye me na saddaheyyuṃ tesaṃ taṃ assa dīgharattaṃ ahitāya dukkhāya. Eso, bhikkhave, satto imasmiṃyeva rājagahe goghātako ahosi. So tassa kammassa vipākena bahūni vassāni bahūni vassasatāni bahūni vassasahassāni bahūni vassasatasahassāni niraye paccitvā tasseva kammassa vipākāvasesena evarūpaṃ attabhāvappaṭilābhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti. Saccaṃ, bhikkhave, moggallāno āha. Anāpatti, bhikkhave, moggallānassā”ti. #36 |
“There are disciples who have vision and knowledge, and they can see, know, and witness such things. I too, monks, have seen that being, but I didn’t speak about it. If I had, others wouldn’t have believed me, and that would have been for their harm and suffering for long time. That being was a cattle-butcher in this very Rājagaha. As a result of his deeds, he was tormented in hell for many years, for many hundreds of years, for many thousands of years, for many hundreds of thousands of years. And now, because of the remaining result of his actions, he’s experiencing such an existence. Moggallāna spoke truthfully. There’s no offense for Moggallāna.” |

Tassā saṅghāṭipi ādittā sampajjalitā sajotibhūtā, pattopi āditto sampajjalito sajotibhūto, kāyabandhanampi ādittaṃ sampajjalitaṃ sajotibhūtaṃ, kāyopi āditto sampajjalito sajotibhūto. Her outer robe was ablaze and burning, as were her bowl, her belt, and her body. She uttered cries of distress. And I thought how amazing and astonishing it is that such a being should exist, such a spirit, such a state of existence.” |

Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to the monks, “This stream, the Tapodā, flows from a lake with beautiful waters—cool, sweet, and pure—with smooth and pleasant banks, with an abundance of fish and turtles, and with blooming lotuses the size of wheels.” |
Bhikkhū ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“kathañhi nāma āyasmā mahāmoggallāno evaṃ vakkhati—‘yatāyaṃ, āvuso, tapodā sandati so daho acchodako sītodako sātodako setako suppatittho ramaṇīyo pahūtamacchakacchapo cakkamattāni ca padumāni pupphantī’ti. Atha ca panāyaṃ tapodā kuthitā sandati. Uttarimanussadhammaṃ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno ullapatī”ti. Bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ. |
The monks complained and criticized him, “How can Venerable Mahāmoggallāna say such a thing? On the contrary, the Tapodā is hot. Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is claiming a superhuman ability.” And they told the Master. |
“Yatāyaṃ, bhikkhave, tapodā sandati so daho acchodako sītodako sātodako setako suppatittho ramaṇīyo pahūtamacchakacchapo cakkamattāni ca padumāni pupphanti. Api cāyaṃ, bhikkhave, tapodā dvinnaṃ mahānirayānaṃ antarikāya āgacchati. Tenāyaṃ tapodā kuthitā sandati. Saccaṃ, bhikkhave, moggallāno āha. Anāpatti, bhikkhave, moggallānassā”ti. #57 |
“Monks, the Tapodā flows from a lake of beautiful waters—with smooth and pleasant banks, with an abundance of fish and turtles, and with blooming lotuses the size of wheels. But the Tapodā runs between the two great hells; that’s why it’s hot. Moggallāna spoke truthfully. There’s no offense for Moggallāna.” |
Tena kho pana samayena rājā māgadho seniyo bimbisāro licchavīhi saddhiṃ saṅgāmento pabhaggo ahosi. Atha rājā pacchā senaṃ saṅkaḍḍhitvā licchavayo parājesi. Saṅgāme ca nandī carati—“raññā licchavī pabhaggā”ti. |
At one time King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha was defeated in battle by the Licchavīs. The King then rallied his army and beat the Licchavīs. People were delighted and the word spread: “The Licchavīs have been defeated by the king!” |

Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to the monks: “The King was defeated by the Licchavīs.” |
Bhikkhū ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“kathañhi nāma āyasmā mahāmoggallāno evaṃ vakkhati—‘rājā, āvuso, licchavīhi pabhaggo’ti. Saṅgāme ca nandī carati—‘raññā licchavī pabhaggā’ti. Uttarimanussadhammaṃ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno ullapatī”ti. Bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ. |
The monks complained and criticized him, “How can Venerable Moggallāna say that the King was defeated by the Licchavīs when people are delighted and the word is spreading that the Licchavīs have been defeated by the King? Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is claiming a superhuman ability.” They told the Master. |
“Paṭhamaṃ, bhikkhave, rājā licchavīhi pabhaggo. Atha rājā pacchā senaṃ saṅkaḍḍhitvā licchavayo parājesi. Saccaṃ, bhikkhave, moggallāno āha. Anāpatti, bhikkhave, moggallānassā”ti. #58 |
“Monks, first the King was defeated by the Licchavīs, but then, after he had rallied his army, the King beat the Licchavīs. Moggallāna spoke truthfully. There’s no offense for Moggallāna.” |
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhikkhū āmantesi—“idhāhaṃ, āvuso, sappinikāya nadiyā tīre āneñjaṃ samādhiṃ samāpanno nāgānaṃ ogayha uttarantānaṃ koñcaṃ karontānaṃ saddaṃ assosin”ti. |
Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to the monks: “After attaining an imperturbable samādhi on the banks of the river Sappinikā, I heard the noise of elephants plunging in, emerging, and trumpeting.” |

“Attheso, bhikkhave, samādhi so ca kho aparisuddho. Saccaṃ, bhikkhave, moggallāno āha. Anāpatti, bhikkhave, moggallānassā”ti. #59 |
“Monks, there is such a samādhi, but it’s not wholly purified. Moggallāna spoke truthfully. There’s no offense for Moggallāna.” |
Atha kho āyasmā sobhito bhikkhū āmantesi—“ahaṃ, āvuso, pañca kappasatāni anussarāmī”ti. |
Venerable Sobhita said to the monks, “I can recall five hundred eons.” |
Bhikkhū ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“kathañhi nāma āyasmā sobhito evaṃ vakkhati—‘ahaṃ, āvuso, pañca kappasatāni anussarāmī’ti. Uttarimanussadhammaṃ āyasmā sobhito ullapatī”ti. Bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ. |
The monks complained and criticized him, “How can Venerable Sobhita say that he can recall five hundred eons? He’s claiming a superhuman ability.” They told the Master. |
“Atthesā, bhikkhave, sobhitassa. Sā ca kho ekāyeva jāti. Saccaṃ, bhikkhave, sobhito āha. Anāpatti, bhikkhave, sobhitassā”ti. #60 |
“Monks, Sobhita has this ability, and that was just one birth. Sobhita spoke truthfully. There’s no offense for Sobhita.” |

Uddiṭṭhā kho āyasmanto cattāro pārājikā dhammā, yesaṃ bhikkhu aññataraṃ vā aññataraṃ vā āpajjitvā na labhati bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ saṃvāsaṃ, yathā pure tathā pacchā, pārājiko hoti asaṃvāso. Tatthāyasmante pucchāmi—“kaccittha parisuddhā”? Dutiyampi pucchāmi—“kaccittha parisuddhā”? Tatiyampi pucchāmi—“kaccittha parisuddhā”? Parisuddhetthāyasmanto, tasmā tuṇhī, evametaṃ dhārayāmīti. |
“Venerables, the four rules entailing expulsion have been recited. If a monk commits any one of them, he is no longer part of the community of monks. As before, so after, he’s expelled and excluded from the community. In regard to this I ask you, ‘Are you pure in this?’ A second time I ask, ‘Are you pure in this?’ A third time I ask, ‘Are you pure in this?’ You are pure in this and therefore silent. I will remember it thus.” |
