    "Friends, once as I was withdrawn in seclusion, | 
evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi —      | 
    this train of thought arose to my awareness, | 
āariyo tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvo, ariyo tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvoti vuccati.      | 
    '"Noble silence, noble silence," it is said. | 
katamo nu kho ariyo tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvoāti?      | 
    But what is noble silence?' | 
tassa mayhaį¹ Ävuso, etadahosi —      | 
    Then the thought occurred to me, | 
āidha bhikkhu vitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ      | 
    'There is the case where a monk, with the stilling of directed thoughts & evaluations, | 
ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹      | 
    [1] enters & remains in the second jhÄna: | 
cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹      | 
    rapture & pleasure born of concentration, | 
avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹      | 
    unification of awareness | 
samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹      | 
    free from directed thought & evaluation — | 
dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati.      | 
    internal assurance. | 
ayaį¹ vuccati ariyo tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvoāti.      | 
    This is called noble silence.' | 
They live with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and gaining skillful qualities. Theyāre strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.      | 
    ÄraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya, kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ upasampadÄya, thÄmavÄ daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. | 
This is the sixth cause.      | 
    Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, chaį¹į¹ho hetu chaį¹į¹ho paccayo ÄdibrahmacariyikÄya paƱƱÄya appaį¹iladdhÄya paį¹ilÄbhÄya, paį¹iladdhÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ saį¹vattati. | 
When in the Saį¹
gha they donāt engage in motley talk or unworthy talk.      | 
    Saį¹ ghagato kho pana anÄnÄkathiko hoti atiracchÄnakathiko. | 
Either they talk on Dhamma, or they invite someone else to do so, or they respect noble silence.      | 
    SÄmaį¹ vÄ dhammaį¹ bhÄsati paraį¹ vÄ ajjhesati ariyaį¹ vÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvaį¹ nÄtimaƱƱati. | 
This is the seventh cause.      | 
    Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, sattamo hetu sattamo paccayo ÄdibrahmacariyikÄya paƱƱÄya appaį¹iladdhÄya paį¹ilÄbhÄya, paį¹iladdhÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ saį¹vattati. | 
They meditate observing rise and fall in the five grasping aggregates.      | 
    PaƱcasu kho pana upÄdÄnakkhandhesu udayabbayÄnupassÄ« viharati: | 
āSuch is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form.      | 
    āiti rÅ«paį¹, iti rÅ«passa samudayo, iti rÅ«passa atthaį¹ gamo; | 
Then the Buddha, knowing that Nandaka was embarrassed, said to him:      | 
    Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ nandakaį¹ sÄrajjamÄnarÅ«paį¹ viditvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ nandakaį¹ etadavoca: | 
āGood, good, Nandaka!      | 
    āsÄdhu sÄdhu, nandaka. | 
Itās appropriate for people from good families like you, who have gone forth in faith from the lay life to homelessness, to sit together for a Dhamma talk.      | 
    Etaį¹ kho, nandaka, tumhÄkaį¹ patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtÄnaį¹ saddhÄya agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajitÄnaį¹, yaį¹ tumhe dhammiyÄ kathÄya sannisÄ«deyyÄtha. | 
When youāre sitting together you should do one of two things:      | 
    SannipatitÄnaį¹ vo, nandaka, dvayaį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹— | 
discuss the teachings or keep noble silence.      | 
    dhammÄ« vÄ kathÄ ariyo vÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvo. | 
āJust now, lord, after the meal, on returning from our alms round, we were sitting gathered here at the assembly hall when this discussion arose: āFriends, which of these two kings has greater wealth, greater possessions, the greater treasury, the larger realm, the greater stock of riding animals, the greater army, greater power, greater might: King Seniya BimbisÄra of Magadha or King Pasenadi of Kosala?ā This was the discussion that had come to no conclusion when the Blessed One arrived.ā      | 
    ⦠āidha, bhante, amhÄkaį¹ pacchÄbhattaį¹ piį¹įøapÄtapaį¹ikkantÄnaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄnasÄlÄyaį¹ sannisinnÄnaį¹ sannipatitÄnaį¹ ayamantarÄkathÄ udapÄdi — āko nu kho, Ävuso, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ rÄjÅ«naį¹ mahaddhanataro vÄ mahÄbhogataro vÄ mahÄkosataro vÄ mahÄvijitataro vÄ mahÄvÄhanataro vÄ mahabbalataro vÄ mahiddhikataro vÄ mahÄnubhÄvataro vÄ rÄjÄ vÄ mÄgadho seniyo bimbisÄro, rÄjÄ vÄ pasenadi kosaloāti? ayaį¹ kho no, bhante, antarÄkathÄ vippakatÄ, atha bhagavÄ anuppattoāti. | 
āIt isnāt proper, monks, that sons of good families, on having gone forth out of faith from home to the homeless life, should talk on such a topic. When you have gathered you have two duties: either Dhamma-talk or noble silence.ā1      | 
    ⦠āna khvetaį¹, bhikkhave, tumhÄkaį¹ patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtÄnaį¹ saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajitÄnaį¹ yaį¹ tumhe evarÅ«piį¹ kathaį¹ katheyyÄtha. sannipatitÄnaį¹ vo, bhikkhave, dvayaį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ — dhammÄ« vÄ kathÄ ariyo vÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvoāti. | 
Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:      | 
    ⦠atha kho bhagavÄ etamatthaį¹ viditvÄ tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi — | 
Any sensual bliss in the world,      | 
    ⦠āyaƱca kÄmasukhaį¹ loke, yaƱcidaį¹ diviyaį¹ sukhaį¹. | 
any heavenly bliss,      | 
    ⦠taį¹hakkhayasukhassete, kalaį¹ nÄgghanti soįø·asināti. dutiyaį¹. | 
isnāt worth one sixteenth-sixteenth      |

of the bliss of the ending of craving.      |

Unfaltering, unshakable,      |

I gladden the mind.      | 
    cittaį¹ ÄmodayÄmahaį¹; | 
I develop the divine meditation,      | 
    BrahmavihÄraį¹ bhÄvemi, | 
which sinners do not cultivate.      | 
    akÄpurisasevitaį¹. | 
Having entered a meditation state without thought,      | 
    Avitakkaį¹ samÄpanno, | 
a disciple of the Buddha      | 
    sammÄsambuddhasÄvako; | 
is at that moment blessed      | 
    Ariyena tuį¹hÄ«bhÄvena, | 
with noble silence.      | 
    upeto hoti tÄvade. | 
āmonks, what were you sitting talking about just now?      | 
    ākÄya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kathÄya sannisinnÄ? | 
What conversation was unfinished?ā      | 
    KÄ ca pana vo antarÄkathÄ vippakatÄāti? | 
āSir, our unfinished discussion on the teaching was about the Buddha himself when the Buddha arrived.ā      | 
    āBhagavantameva kho no, bhante, Ärabbha dhammÄ« kathÄ vippakatÄ, atha bhagavÄ anuppattoāti. |
