(derived from Thanissaro trans. Thai 8:70) | |
Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

Then a certain monk went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. |
ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: |
As he was sitting there he said to the Blessed One: |
āsÄdhu me, bhante, bhagavÄ saį¹khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, |
āIt would be good if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief so that, |
yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvÄ eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanāti. |
having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone in seclusion: heedful, ardent, & resolute.ā |
āEvamevaį¹ panidhekacce moghapurisÄ mamaƱƱeva ajjhesanti. |
āBut it is in just this way that some worthless men make a request but then, |
Dhamme ca bhÄsite mamaƱƱeva anubandhitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«āti. |
having been told the Dhamma, think they should tag along right behind me.ā |
āDesetu me, bhante, bhagavÄ saį¹khittena dhammaį¹, |
āMay the Blessed One teach me the Dhamma in brief! |
desetu sugato saį¹khittena dhammaį¹. |
May the One Well-Gone teach me the Dhamma in brief! |
Appeva nÄmÄhaį¹ bhagavato bhÄsitassa atthaį¹ ÄjÄneyyaį¹, |
It may well be that I will understand the Blessed Oneās words. |
appeva nÄmÄhaį¹ bhagavato bhÄsitassa dÄyÄdo assanāti. |
It may well be that I will become an heir to the Blessed Oneās words.ā |
