walking in jhāna comment

the word jhāna not used here explicitly (but is in AN 3.63). Here, you have to put 2 + 2 together. When you have 5 hindrances removed, check, samadhi, check, ekagga, check, sati, check, and the clincher is kaya-passaddhi (bodily tranquility). Itā€™s possible to have 2nd through fourth jhana quality of samadhi without being one of the four jhanas if the body isnā€™t relaxed or calm enough for piti-sukha juice to pump through your veins. But if you got passadhi, then sukha follows that awakening factor like a shadow in the 7sb (see SN 46.2, SN 46.3).

To believe that the walking described in this sutta is not the four jhānas, at the least the first 3 jhānas, would be like someone who happened to catch clark kent wearing a 3 piece suit, glasses, and flying through the air and saying, ā€œthatā€™s not superman, superman wouldnā€™t wear glasses, he wears red and blue tights with an ā€œSā€ on his chest.ā€

[For a skilled meditator, the nimitta images are visual images that appear in the mind's eye of the meditator, whether their eyes are closed or open. It appears as clearly and vividly as if a normal person using their open eyes were looking at a corpse in a graveyard. ]
[For a less skilled meditator, it is ok to use a nimitta image of a mentally created visualization, or just a concept or idea for that nimitta.]

If a monk has an excellent nimitta of samādhi arise, an excellent sign seen while in undistractible-lucidity, he must continuously and repeatedly protect that nimitta [and the high quality of his undistractible-lucidity].
[These are the five types of excellent nimitta images that may arise.]

[4.2] The perception of a worm infested corpse.

Luminosity-perception: (his) mind attends.

as-by Day so-by night,
yathā rattiį¹ƒ tathā divā.
As-by-night so-by day,
Iti vivaį¹­ena cetasā a-pariyonaddhena
